if mullet are jumping for flies...

Will they actually go for anything else...

I'm fortunate enough the live only a few feet from a crap load of mullet.

I've only just started targeting them with bread with no success yet.

They are jumping like mad lately for flies... but without a fly rod that is useless to me...

Will they go for bread at this stage of would I be wasting my time?

I tried very small old mepps lures I had laying around and they took a few swipes at them but probably just curiosity...

Any ideas? Or should I just be consistent with the bread?

Was watching Henry Gilbey fishing for them (on the Telly of course) in Carrigaholt and he used mackeral. He put a small bit of mac on a small hook and then wrapped a bigger piece in the line above the hook - just wound the main line around the fillet a few times to stop it sinking or moving off with the tide. The mullet went ape-sh1t for the fillet but he and his mate did land a few which took the hook bait.

Vinnie, drop me a line (pardon the pun  ) whenever you want to meet up for mullet on the fly, I've got all the necessary gear and am more than happy to let you use it, never tried it myself so someone with a bit of experience is invited to join up and show maybe us a few tricks and have a bit of craic  8)

Here a few facts to read beforehand perhaps:

Where are these mullet?

Are you sure they are jumping for flies? Bear in mind that mullet are a very playful/spooky fish, they often chase each other and leap out of the water for no apparent reason. Also it would be very unusual for them to jump out of the water for flies, the very few times i have witnessed them taking of the surface they make trout look clumsy, only making little dimples on the surface.

It all really depends on the exact location. This will dictate what method will be best, or indeed if they are even feeding. There are many spots where they congregate but do not feed.

Let us know.

i'm pretty certain it was flies they were jumping for.. it was on one of those 2 hot days last week... and they were leaping fully out of the water where swarms of small flies were congregating....

If it wasn't flies what would they be leaping for then? this was at a rate of about 1 every 30 seconds at one point for a period of about 2 hours (5-7 pm) until the sun dipped well beyond the mark.... were they showing off for the ladies?

they weren't the biggest mullet either... maybe just a couple of pounds... beautiful despite the conditions they thrive in.
