wrass fishing

quick question on whats the best debth of water to catch wrass in, hard on the bottom or float fishing will be using rag and most likely crab for bait..

In my experience (very little, new enough)
Have caught Wrasse while fishing on the bottom with lug, peeler crab, AND fishing about with a float with lug 4 feet below. The float helped lure the Wrasse from the kelp and rocks and hence give me a better chanced at landing them with ease.
I also heard they suffer from sudden changes in depth so the float also helps in this respect.

This was in south kerry off rock and the overall depth of water was about 16 feet approx where the Wrasse were being caught.
Hope this is helps a bit. I far from experienced and im sure the lads may have a lot better advice but it might get ya started in the right direction.

You can catch them at any depth. The key is that they like shelter, so they don't want to be right at the surface or out in open water. Try from a couple of feet under the surface downwards to the bottom in rough ground, among rocks and kelp, or hard up to the side of a pier.

used to catch loads of them in waterford 2yrs ago off the rocks rag or lug dropped down beside the rocks in gulleys .. etc wit 2 oz lead and light gear is some fun u could catch ten or more decent size in an hour or two great fight off em

i had loads last summer at the hook, with a one hook pat with a short snood and the snood about two feet off the bottom.
i ledgered for them also but had a better hook up rate with the paternoster.
