Bass

Ah the age old question on this forum. How do I catch them? I know clearly the location is a key element and people rightly don't want to give up their known bass marks so I'm not looking for locations. But I'd like to know if I'm approaching it in the right way if I do happen upon a good mark. I've picked up a few tit bits here and there but I'd like a bit more advice as to how to targeting them (not for a month from the 15th of course!).

Can anyone tell me if the following assumptions are correct and can anyone add to the list. Ta.

Good surf. They like a bit of surf to churn up their grub.
Fish close. I should be lobbing no further than the 3rd or 4th breaking wave from the shore. No more than 40-50 yards. I could even fish closer than than that, maybe even as close as 10-20 yards.
Use a pulley or ledger rig. A single decent sized hook (e.g. 3/0) with rag tipped with mack. The reason for this is because they're a clever fish and might not be as likely to take the bait if they feel a weight at the end of it as with a 3 hook flapper for example. Any other rig/ bait suggestions?
Bite detection. A bass will give a couple of good bites and then the line will go slack as he swims to shore. If you see a slack line reel in quickly. Anything else to do if you think you have a bite?
What else am I missing?
I think I know of a good location for them which may involve wading in, up to waist deep. Should I do anything different for this type of fishing than the above.

Any suggestions greatly appreciate. I'm new to fishing and have yet to catch one.

Tight lines!

im no expert as i only caught my first Bass a few weeks ago but ive had a few since.

all my fish took razor except one that took crab but this will depend on where your fishing. i usually use a 2 hook flapper with size 2s. i know its a bit dodgy using small hooks but ive a chance of getting flatties as well as Bass on the beach i fish. i only cast out 35-40 yards but if the tide is going out i put it a small bit further. this particular beach seems to fish best about 90mins before and after low water but again, this might differ from where your gonna fish.

this might be of no help to you but best of luck. i can honestly say my heart was thumping and my smile was from ear to ear when i landed my first one. it was worth the 8 month wait.
