Float fishing

Guys, this might sound totally daft, but i have been thinking about this for a while now

I have only ever float fished with a single hook on 3-4 feet snood.

Would it make any sense to replace this with a 3 hook rig, with the weight attached to the end of the rig, rather than above the swivel below the float. Obviously the weight would have to reduced to compensate for the weight of the extra 2 baited hooks.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Had been thinking about more than one hook on a float set-up myself.

A few potential problems may come up, for example, the snoods getting tangled up around each other or the rig body itself.

This could be counter-acted by placing floaty beads near the hook on each snood, whilst the weight of the hook and bait should be sufficent to not allow the baited hook to float towards the surface, it may provide enough bouyancy, aided with the movement of the water, to suspend each baited hook parellel to the swivel attaching the snood to the mainline, ie you should have 3 snoods on your flapper all parallel to the water level, but obviously at 3 different heights in the water.

I've fished float with a 3 way swivel on bottom a few times, with different lengths on the two swivel connectiions... haven;t had any trouble with them, they have worked for pollack and such off piers...

No problem using a three hook rig with the float setup, good way to try a couple of different baits at once and see what the fish are taking. I float fish as often as possible but I won't use a 3 hook rig as I enjoy using a single hook for the sporting aspect. Same as when I fish for mackerel, far more enjoyable catching one on spinner than a full house on feathers. Just my opinion mind.

I stick small 3 hook baited hokkais on a float and catch all sorts, Ive never been known for exact science, its all about experimentation!

sounds like a sound idea, but would be worth sticking to the standard set up till you were landing fish in good numbers
ie.. when the mack are on the feed, cos you'll more than likely only get the one hook up at a time......

i agree its all about experimentation,try different rigs and at different depths you never know what will work best
the brother got a wrasse on the small 3 hook hokkais without bait or float he just held the rod with the hooks about a meter below the surface

Got out on Sunday and gave it a try. Had a float rated for 1.25oz, so stuck on a 2 boom rig to avoid tangles, with a 1oz weight on the end.

Blanked , but the set up casted like a dream. i am always paranoid about the hook length tangling on the float whwn fishing a single hook, but with the weight at the end of the rig, you could see everything hitting the water in the right order.

Totally agree lads. I should have explained in my original post that I was wanting to try different baits, not go for multiple catches. Besides, the way my luck goes, I'm lucky to even get a single hook up
