HOW LONG IS YOURS???????

Pully rigs? i,ve tried different lengths and found 18" to 20" about the best all round length longer ones seem to tangle unless their is a good tide to keep them straight and they are a disaster in a big surf .i use shorter for rough ground down to 10" with a lead lift on some marks ,any tips or tricks ,or preffered hooks?

I use around 3 feet rig and snood. Rig line of 80lbs and snood line dependant on what hook size I use. For example I'd use 60lb with 3/0 penel but will shorten down to 2 feet for 30lb snood with 1/0 penel. Under 60lbs I will shorten the snood but it's easier to shorten the pulley while fishing then lenghten. The rig line should be good quality with low memory otherwise it curls up

I use 5mm beads to trap a 1/0 rounded swivel and an 80lb swivel for the connection to the snood. To attach the lead I generaly use a gemini clip swivel as they are cheap for rough ground and a clip lead can be used for distance. I also use imps to get distance without using expensive leads. These can easily be put on while out fishing as can rotten bottom clips that can be slide on.

I also use mushroom clips for bulkier baits but as the swivel will now be against the bead during the cast I use rubber bead to cushion the lmpact. Mushroom clips are also great for wishbone pulleys as it makes two hooked baits more aerodynamic.

You might guess I use the pulley rig alot as I have caught more than 90% of my ray on it and they are fished over rough stuff so there are losses. I put two pulleys per pocket on my rig wallet and still have 1 and half rig wallets full of the things

Same as Donagh.

Around the 30" -36" usually.....Main body of 80lb and hooklength 25lb-30lb.

I've found if fishing a deep water mark or fishing from a high spot (ie rocks/piers), when the crabs are ravaging the baits, try shortening the hook length to say 8-10 inches (with a 40-60" length from the lead to the swivel), this takes the bait a bit off the bottom and will give your bait longer in the water.

Another solution to this is I have found it to use a running ledger type rig, but clip the hook up to the swivel at the shockleader. Put a few floaty beads close to the hook. Its kinda like an upside down pulley rig I guess. Again, this will suspend the bait off the bottom, and you can obviously vary the hook length to get the bait highe/lower off the bottom as needed. Maybe this rig has a name, I dunno. I've tried it the odd time when fishing for bass in areas that the crabs are extremely bad. It defo works 8)

In theory either of these should work well for the likes of bass and cod, but not so well for species like ray that may feed hard on the bottom.

I also remember reading a report (think it was rockhunter), who had been missing a good few bass bites on a surf beach, so he shortened the hook length on his pulley to around 8", and this resulted in a greater hook up rate, he put it down to more resistance on the hook when the fish hit the bait.

Any thoughts on the above lads :?:

it's longer than yours! about 3 to 6 feet... thats 3feet for margin of error with my knots

dont like those mini pulleys, missed a few good fish on them on different venues... a few too many on the east coast

keeping the bait just off the bottom can work well in the rough... just found i missed cod bites on the short snoods regularly. made the rig lenght longer and made the snood 2 to 3 feet and never missed one since. short snoods seemed fine for wrasse.

are the 10" pulleys flappers or clipped? what lenght rigbody with the 10" snood???

kamasan 3/0 or 5/0 uptides.

use a small piece of tubing about 3cm long and put it through the eye of the moving swivel. wrap 4 or 5 turns of copper wire/ telephone wire around the tubing either side of the swivel. this stops the swivel coming off the tubing no more kinks/ swivel pinches on your rigbody even after pulling out of snag after snag. a little bulky but not bad.

Im personally like to keep them short, can see no advantage of having a long snood, 3O inch max, usuallly 2O -24.

Check this out steve allmark making a pulley rig for ray fishing might be of help.

mark the 10 inch would be clipped with an imp and rig body 11 or 12 inches keeping the bait down without letting it get wrapped around snags ,i dont use pully rigs for bass as a rule i tend to use two hook clipped down rigs and put a pennel on the bottom 1/0 pennel and 3/0 main hook and a 3/0 on the top :wink:imps rock for reliability they always unclipp 8)

ah i have tried them that lenght Roger. just never did well with them. i know other lads that do. fair point about the rough ground and short rig not catching as much rock but a bait tight behind your lead could follow the lead down into rocks too... ah now i just sound like i am being difficult :?

ever wondered what those pully rigs do under the water ,on rough ground i always imagine them wrapped up in kelp and think its pure luck when you get one back

try the long ones against the short ones and see what happens. 30" is a good alrounder. a short snood on short pulley can see the bait follow the lead down into rough. the long snood gives the fish time to get the bait down before moving off, especially if it's a big bait! i have missed ray and cod on the shorter rigs when there is little in the way of tide. if the run is strong and you are worried that the bait is kiting in the tide use an up and over(obviously not over rough ground). a one hook paternoster is good over rough ground and great at close range. hard to beat. each to there own at the end of the day though :D
