Baldoyle Rag

Fri Feb 06, 2009 4:00 pm

Does anyone know if it is still possible to dig rag in Baldoyle behind the church? I haven't been down that way in a couple of years. The last time I was there was some sort of pipe being laid but I carried on regardless.
It is getting harder to source decent rag and lug so I am going back to getting my own, hard work, but worth it.

thanks in advance for the info
Dave

Hi dave, baldoyle is a shadow of its former self as far as fishing and bait collection is concerned, since the pipeline works theres almost nothing there.you`ll still get some rag,in season(spawning now),but ever since commercial collectors cleaned the mussel bed out of it(for seed) a few years back its been terrible.did`nt appreciate it enough as a child(we`d dig rag for last hr of the ebb and catch bass on the flood almost every time, havent heard of bass taken in the estuary in almost 20 years).

Fished the top of dollymount 3 times last summer/autumn, fished into the channel opposite sutton from low water up for around 3 hours, got my first ever bass.....well 2 actually on a 3 hook flapper

I'd fish there more often in future, but the weed was bad, and the walk is a killer, defo give it another go sometime this year though.

I've often dug my rag fairly close to there, wont say where publicly (pm me if you want the location), its productive digging (but hard work), especially good if you want the bigger rag for bass or pollock fishing, but they are that big they'd be useless for flattie fishing etc.
