I'd imagine that salting would remove the moisture and therefore kill most of the killer scent trail that's central to use of peeler crab...

Seanie,

theres this new invention called a freezer   When yer peelers start to pop, remove the lungs, wrap in clingfilm and freeze (on a tray if you can). They will still catch fish. Or you can assalt them instead if you like

yeah dennis gonna try it next time i've got some about to turn. I'm thinking lay them flat and slice into 2 halfs so they might absorb the salt quicker. If anything I should add to the already exotic smell coming from my shed

When frozen the lungs taint the crab and while theres often debate about this it is generally accepted that frozen crab without lungs will totally outfish frozen with the lungs. Most people will wait for the crab to be ready to pop (more juices and easy to peel), peel the shell off the back and remove the lungs. Wrap in tinfoil or clingfilm and freeze. I then store mine in a box like the chinese takeaways come in or a tinfoil box with a cardboard lid. Also you can keep the legs and claws as added bait. Wen you go fishin bring em frozen (some people recommend a flask) and take em out as you need em. This way they wont all thaw and you can save some, as they dont seem effective if you refreeze em. Hope this helps.
