I havent heard much from the belfast lough this year. But for rays the best place to get them is fahan and I dont usually go up until may.
regards to bait digging I dont think you will have much luck there on the rag and crabs, but most beach around bangor should sort ya out.

I have absolutely no problems digging rag on the shore of belfast lough. Half an hour is all I need to have more than enough to fish with. But the shore fishing can be hard going, but on its day can produce. Holywood is certainly a decent mark for flounder and is a fantastic mark for mullet, also the odd salmon, whiting in season. Greys point is a great mark for Mackerel and will also produce coalies, pollock, wrasse, sea scorpion and whiting and codling in season. If you fish close to Helens bay beach its a good mark for dogfish and the odd sea trout. Crawfordsburn beach will produce flounder, dogfish and the odd sea trout. From Crawfordsburn to Bangor you will find quite a few rock marks which will produce the usual rock species: wrasse, pollock, coalie, mackerel, codling. As I mentioned before Belfast lough can be very hit and miss, but some days you can reap the rewards.

think you'll still get the rag ang lug about the lough
at a spot just on past the abbey center, turn right
at the roundabout and head through the houses till
the shore line, few lads i know still dig there. have
heard that the back of carrick castle fishes ok, but
i've never wet a line along that stretch of water so
i'm only going on what other lads have told me......

Have caught the occasional sea trout in the lough but the odd salmon seems interesting. Can you please advise regarding lures/baits etc and the approximate size of salmon caught?

The salmon would usually average between 3-5 pounds, so in fact they would be grilse. I cannot disclose the location as a forum member give me the information. Tactics are not typical for salmon, basic paternoster rig with mackerel and sandeel being the best baits. The mark was stumbled upon by accident when fishing for whiting. Sorry, thats about all I can say.

Thank's rab01. I understand the reason for confidentially and it is best kept that way. I am interested as salmon are very difficult to catch in the sea and if I thought they could be caught in Belfast Lough it would save me the journey to Mayo. Have you proof other than what you have been told that these fish were caught while shore fishing in Belfast Lough?
