Herring is lethal for cod.....

Herring would be their primary feed, well before mack.
(At least thats what I read in a book....!!)

No contest mate, Mack everytime. But Herring will still catch, maybe better just using it to tip off a worm bait. By the way, your hands will stink for an age after handling Herring.

Howdy i've had good sucess with herring which can catch when other baits aren't doing the business, especially so when boat fishing...... makes a fine cod bait too.

i use both mackerel and herring,
one thing about the herring, its a lethal bait for seatrout 8) on a session last year i ran out of bait, so i went to the supermarget and got a load of herring, i ended the session with 11 seatrout for under two hours fishing, all got on the herring 8) 8)

Your Local fishmonger should have them especially this time of year supermarkets carry them also and some tackle dealers will carry frozen ones as they're used for pike. Try and get them fresh if you can....tight lines :)
