Westport, Co. Mayo - 18th of January

Sun Jan 11, 2009 3:45 pm

I'm heading to Westport, Co. Mayo next weekend and looking for advice from you guys on what winter fishing is like down there, where the good marks are, what are the species available this time of year and what type of bait is good.

Any advise or info would be much appreciated.

Ps. PM me the marks if you wish to keep them private.

Hi Michael

I've tried some of the bigger ocean marks and it has been brutal. Bitter cold and not a lot of fish bar small coalies, by the tonne. Very poor reports in the last week or so, which would be understandable given the persistent easterlies and the really cold snap.

If you're staying in Westport, I would try some of the inshore marks in and around the islands, like around Rosmoney or Rossansubble or even Mulranny pier at high water for flounder, dogs, huss and even the possibility of a small ray on the middle mark.

If you were prepared to travel a bit, Little Killary is fishing reasonably well with dabs reported alongside all the usual suspects - lots of whiting but most of them very small. Wherever you head to, I would advise you look for a sheltered spot that the fish might be collected in as I can tell you directly and from others that the big beaches are producing feck all!

Do not even bother with Achill although I did miss one superb take, possibly a big sea trout. Keel and Keem are both deserted with small flounder and the odd turbot showing in reports.

FWIW
