Clogherhead, Dundalk Bay, Carlingford Lough - a bit of help

Fri Jan 09, 2009 4:00 pm

Right lads,

I fancy a bit of a change to my usual fishing locations, so am considering a morning session this sunday around the areas stated above.

I've never fished north of Laytown, and dont know anybody who has, so was hoping for a bit of help from anybody here who has a bit of knowledge to point me in the right direction.

If possible, i'd like to avoid the whiting plague (but I'll be fishing daylight so that should help), and I'm open to suggestions of what to target and where to fish. I'll be bait fishing though, if that helps

Info by pm is welcomed if you dont wish to divulge too much on thread.

Thanking you all in advance.

Hi,

Have fished Clogerhead harbor and beach a couple of time, but get nothing serious here. From the harbor a couple of wrasse and scorpion fish :? and from the beach a ton of weed  ... But there is always some guys fishing the rocky part of the beach, and have heard that it could hold codling, flatties and bass (maybe too late for this one)...
For Carlingford never fished it but seems to be best in summer and autumn for bass and tope...
This venues are very scenic, Clogerhead beach is very nice and look like it could be hiding some nice fish...

From my little knowledge, you can find deep water on the seaside of the clogerhead harbor wall...

we fished the rock marks behind the toilets in port oriel during the summer. there are some good deep spots that you don't have to cast too far to reach. we also fished some of the other locations you were asking about. if you look for our co.louth/co.meath post from the summer it's got the pics of the marks we fished. i know it will fish different at this time of year but it will give you an idea where to fish with some directions    i'm planning to head down that way myself in the next few weeks to tie in with eyesreilley for a session. i'll p.m. you nearer the time, and if your free you could get a session with us.

Sounds good Alan, thanks for the help.

Dave has my contact number anyhow, so get him to give me a call when you have some idea of when your fishing. Or drop me a pm.

If I'm free, it would be good to meet up.

Mark

Roger,

I fished Laytown twice last summer, didnt have waders then, so could only really fish the last 2-3 hours of the fill, did get 2 nice flounder, but that was all, talked to a few locals who had been catching bass but not in any great numbers/size. Most seemed to be fishing with big rag baits, would that be best for that beach do you think? I had fresh crab both times I fished there, but it was the rag that got me the flounder.

Got the pm, thanks Keith.

As things have panned out this weekend, I've too much work on to get out, so gonna take a trip up that way next weekend I reckon, so keep the tips coming, thanks lads.

Just found this thread

 So im not the only one looking for decent marks in this area...hoping to go to a beach north of dundalk at the weekend, which is clean and has decent surf looks to me like it may hold some decent fish. I am also trying to avoid the whiting which i have been catching over the last few weeks and trgeting some cod etc, does anyone know any good beach marks north of dundalk. Hoping to fish saturday afternoon into the evening - which suits with the tides.

PM please :!: if you know any decent marks close to dundalk lads!! thanks..

Conor
