Skjervoy Norway

How are we all..

Im looking for some information/pointers on the below:

Carpets, Pat and myself have booked a fishing trip away in Skjervoy Norway with Anglers World from the 31st March to 7th April 2009. We are getting a self drive Arvor for the duration of our stay.
We are arranging our own transport to Tromso/flights etc, now here comes the questions !!

Seen as we are making our own way to Tromso, what is the best possible way to get our fishing gear from Ireland to Tromso/Skjervoy?
We want to bring 3 rods each with us; 30lb boat rod, 6-10oz uptider and a spinning rod each as we want to knock abit of sport out of the different species rather than skull draging for a week! Plus all the associated gear for each rod, reels, pirks etc.
Can you DHL your gear in advance? Were traveling with SAS airlinees which will allow 20kg each, but I dont think that will cover it.

What kind of fishing is ahead of us during our time there?
How far will we need to steam to find productive fishing grounds?
What safety equipment would we need to bring for the Boat?
What weather will we most likely encounter at that time of year?
What are the prices in Skjervoy for buying fishing tackle?

Ive tried the search function btw.
I think thats enough questions for now !!

Any help most welcome.

Cheers!

hi Danny ,we fished out of skervoy for 3 years ,once in may and twice july , I'll pm you a few of the gps marks that fished well ( cod to 60 lb ) you might be a bit early for the big coalies but there'll be plenty of good cod ,haddock and wolffish ,torsk are a pain in the ass check the holiday section for a report . with the arvour you'll be spoilt for choice with loads of ground available ,we only fished the wee 18 foot open boats ( 15 miles from port is interesting but there were 3 boats buddying up ) you dont lose that much gear as you normally fish well up from the bottom unless your fishing for wolf-fish .
A good selection of shads and a few norwegian pirks should see you ok .
shipping gear is best to put the rods in a good rod tube ,check out the cost for out sized luggage/sports goods and get the weight ,then you can fill the rod tube with pirks shads etc as well as the rods ,they used to only charge for the rod tube regardless of weight up to a limit of course ,so you might as well get as much free as possible

also for getting from tromso to skervoy you can get the fast ferry ,about a tenner from the air port to ferry by taxi then another 30 quid roughly for the ferry to skervoy ,the fish camp is 15min walk from the ferry terminal or a couple of quid in the taxi which wait for the ferry coming in . far better than sitting in a coach for 3 hrs and quicker as well .

Cheers for the reply Ronald.

Sounds good. I like the rod tube idea

Are the waters up there busy with traffic and other anglers?
And what is the average depth of water you would be fishing?

Im just firing out these questions as I think of them !

Cheers

almost forgot ,you can get big plaice and wee (10lb ) cod in the harbour when the weather is bad also a few reefs within 5mins of the harbour for cod 20/30lb but most fish 10/20lb .
there's a photo on here of a couple of fish taken 10 mins from the harbour

boat traffic is reasonably quite ,though the last 2 years we fished during night time and slept during the day ( it doesn't get dark in july ) when your there it'll be darkness as normal with a bit of snow/ice as well so bring plenty of warm gear .
You'll see the other small boats fishing the reefs and your gps should still have marks from were the last group fished . but the harbour is massive and about 120 feet at the entrance  mostly the fish will be in the 150/200 feet mark even in 500 feet of water ,just watch the fish finder and you'll see were the shoals stop ,if you can find a shoal of coalies fish just below them and the big cod will be hanging about there ,also if you hook a wee coalie leave it down there as the bigger cod will hit them ,
