Scorpion Fish specimen / record size

Tue Dec 09, 2008 6:50 pm

I’ve been asked by a friend to put this into this pool of knowledge… can anyone tell him the specimen / record size for a Scorpion fish, :?:

He has been told by a fellow angler that the one he caught is well over specimen size and maybe a new record… I’ve not seen any pictures of it myself yet and cant say much more about it,

I have tried a few site’s and cant seem to find any recorded size except a minimum size in the Rosslare small boats there min size is 20cm,

Can anyone help on this one,

Cheers.

Hi Frank,

That may be the reason i cant find anything about it... but surely there must be some kind of recorded size going by what this chap said when told about the fish... Maybe we should start our own mini species list just to keep this guy happy :)

there isn`t an irish record for short spinned sea scorpion so there wont be a specimen weight.if the ISFC get enough claims for this species they might consider adding it to the list.we submitted claims for tadpole fish hoping to get it added but we`ve not fished for them for a year or so which will slow things down a bit.
the black mouthed dogfish was added to the records/specimen list last year because the ISFC had recieved a good number of claims over a couple of years.
the british record for short spinned sea scorpion is 2lb 7oz so if it was added to the irish specimen list you might be looking at a specimen weight 1lb-1.5lb(maybe)

i too submitted a claim on behalf of my girlfriend now my wife about 18 years ago for a tadpole fish she caught. i had 1 last year there is a pic of it here somewhere but i did not bother killing it to submit it. im not sure if they would have excepted a picture this time.

 I didn't realise they grew to that size, the ones I've seen and caught myself have all been tiddlers.

Btw that's some fish Eyes

alright john1.we just took good photos from the side and a close up of the head from the front.you couldn`t mistake a tadpole fish for anything else so there should be no need to kill it to claim a record/specimen.
the ISFC have changed the rules and are thankfully accepting claims that come with good quality photos of important identifing features so the fish doesn`t need to be killed.some fish still need to be killed but hopefully in the future all fish can be claimed for this way.

That makes sense alright, I didn't realise that there are two different species.

Thank you gentlemen for the interesting reply’s

And you eyes Reilly for your interest I hope the spines didn’t tickle too much on the way out,

Dave,

I have asked the chap that caught the fish to post a picture on here for you to look at and maybe tell him what type of scorpion it is… he is having trouble uploading it to his pc but when he does it will be on here,

It’s nice to know how big any fish might grow to… be it little or large that’s why records are kept,

How hard would it be for the specimen committee to type this and other fish onto the list…

I’m looking forward to catching one myself now after hearing how good the fight is… according to eyes Reilly    8)

no thats just the electrical current that goes through these fish when handled it's a very specialised camera i use that picks it up.

you have been warned handle this fish with extreme care
if you are fortunate to catch one .
i think you have a better chance of winning the lotto to be honest   :lol
