Ballinacourty pier, whiting bay or Ballyquinn strand??

Tue Dec 09, 2008 12:09 am

Hi looking to do my first beach session prob an early morning fish low to the HW mark, having fished ardmore pier and Helvick in the summer am looking for a place to try my hand at the winter species maybe the bass, or more probably the whiting and coalfish.

As my casting would not be of a huge distance can anyone tell me which place would be better? perhaps with the deeper water etc??

Cheers

Well Tipp Angler I would recommend two things If your casting isn't that great #1 Fish the pier that way you wouldnt have to cast that far to hit the fish ! OR #2 Purchase some 5 or 6 oz impact leads and buy or make some clipped down rigs these will improve your casting distances . Best of luck

I would avoid ballinacourty unless your after dogs. In the autumn a good caster can catch ray at balinacourty over to the left of the pier. Its a good pluggin area in the channel inthe summer at low water on big tides.

Ballinagoul mite be better than ballinacourty at this time of year at hi water if you were fishin after a storm particularly.

Therefore, if you are after bass or flatties I would try whitin bay, ballyquin, or clonea. You don't have to be able to cast too far for these species most of the time. For cod, whitin etc maybe try ferrypoint.

Thanks for the advice think will try ballyquinn depending on the weather, if not go to ballinagoul as this is more sheltered. will let you know how get on. hoping to have some beginners luck on the first winter session...

Well I finally got to head out after a week or so delay due to car trouble.

Ended up heading to Ballinagoul but the wind was howling in so drove round to Ballinacourty pier which was much more sheltered was fishing with mack, squid and peeler but just attracted crabs. It was nice to head to a different part of Dungarvan and passed some lovely looking spots.

Ended up spottin a seal in the channel heading through the town he was having much more luck than me i'd say :P .

Thanks for all the advice will be back again
