Hi Shane,

No cod so far this year, but lots & lots of small whiting. The grassy area near the park benches along the wall itself is probably the best area. The pier has been crowded almost every day since the summer with "anglers" armed with lidl rods using tinned sardines as bait catching doggies along with crabs mussel and what ever else can be caught to eat

Yeah you can get years like that, they were fairly thin on the ground outside all year too. Cod can appear on a tide in Monkstown. Some years they don't show at all. Last year was a poor enough year for them also but I wouldn't read a whole lot into it

Yeah, they came in fits and spurts last year alright, some good fishing to be had in February actually from what I remember. There are some whopper whiting there at the moment too if you can get past the small ones, try just using some larger lumps of mack.

Lads what are the best tides to fish the wall, is it hard to hold bottom down there, and is peeler no.1 bait? In college in cork and wer hoping to get down to this spot in the next week or two. Any tips would be much appreciated

James,

There's a big rip here so best times to fish are either side of HW or LW. A lot of anglers prefer low water for the better fishing simply because the fish won't have spread out yet as the tide floods up the harbour.

If it's codling you're after then - yes peeler is absolute king, black lug and all the usual works but fresh peeler will outfish everything else. For whiting and the other bits worm/fish will do fine, spare the crab for the cod

fished the pier today with not much success. loads of small whiting but nothing worth keeping also got some crabs and starfish as usual. baits were black lug, frozen mack, squid and mixed seafood. didnt matter what was on the hooks as they took everything

Some nice whiting, tiny codling, Pout and Poor cod yesterday for myself and JP. No sign of anything sizeable being caught. As an aside and a little OT, for anyone contemplating fishing Fountainstown in the near future, forget it. 8/9 of us fished the flood there with Crosshaven for a club MA on Saturday night and 3 of us shared 1st place with a single whiting, brutal.
