Fishing in Mayo

Sat Jan 29, 2005 11:48 am

I'm off to Westport at the end of May for a week. As well as a day's boat fishing with Mary GH, I'm intending to do some shore fishing. I'm looking ofr some marks to fish for pollack, coalies, wrasse, mackerel, etc, so either rocks or piers will be best. If anyone has any tips, I'd appreciate it.

Also, are there any shops in the area where I could buy bait - eg ragworms for the wrasse ?

Thanks.

There's a tackle shop in Westport which usually has ragworm, especially at the weekend, and also can give you a handy - and free - shore fishing map. Mulrany pier is good for wrasse and pollack, Roonagh quay where the boat leaves for Clare Island also worth a try.

Hi

You can check out all the listed tackle shops on http://www.cfb.ie

Hewetsons in Westport would be the one referred to above, but be warned that ragworm is impossible to find in Mayo so it can run scarce quickly!

Have you checked all the shore marks on this website?

Mulrany pier has had work done recently and is now far shallower than previous so it is only good as a high tide venue, ditto Roonagh. You would be better fished off the rocks at various points or even on the beaches...

FWIW...
