hi, im very very new to fishing. i was only fishing for mackerel all summer but want to try something different. i was out last night and caught a dog and a small conger along with a few small whiting and i loved it. im looking to head out somewhere again tonight or tomorrow and dont really care what i catch as long as i get a good fight. can anyone point me to somewhere?? i dont mind if its a beach, pier or rocks as long as its been fishing well recently.
also, if anyones good enough to tell me where to try, could you also tell me which bait works best there and what size hooks would be best.
tanx a mill,
red.

Hello red,
What you're asking for here is exactly what I've been looking for (with the great help of this site), and with success on many occasions, for the last few years since I came back to sea angling.....

Everything you want to give you a chance of catching something in the Cork area is in here.
For example I'm guessing that your simplest chance of catching something in wintertime might be to bait fish with simple rigs off the bridge in Kinsale, off some of the quays in Cobh, or Youghal maybe. But you would probably end up getting lots of small fish, and not the "good fight" you're looking for :?

If you are very new to fishing you will need to get familiar with some basic methods and species, and build from there. I really recommend a no-nonsense book - Sea Fishing Properly Explained, a paperback available for about 5 quid from a website http://www.right-way.co.uk (or maybe other websites).

Also if it's good advice you're looking for there's a link on this site - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10354, have a look!

Once you get to know the basics you can do searches on this site, as gfk.. says, check for shore marks, then do searches here. Also you can look at the species hunt to see what's available around Ireland.
At that stage you are giving yourself a chance of landing a big 'un

Cork has the biggest coast line on this island
It might help if you posted where you would prefer to fish or where you are located, East Cork, Cork Harbour area, Kinsale-Courtmacsherry or way down West Cork

thanks for all the info lads.
i was on the quays in cobh on friday night with a little sucess. that was where i got the doggie and small conger.
im living in the macroom area so most places are about an hour or so away from me. i was in rosscarbery last week and got nothin bigger than my hand. its supposed to be a good spot so gonna give it another go when i get a chance. i dont really have a preferance to where i go. i love east cork as i spent a lot of summers there when i was younger and have got to know west cork a bit better in the last few years. i think my next spot to try might be white bay or maybe inch in east cork.
tanx again lads for the info and links.
