Anyone ever use a multiplier rod with a fixed spool. Would this work or would it damage the rod/reel and/or reduce casting distance.

You can use a fixed spool reel with a multiplier rod but you can't use a multiplier reel with a fixed spool rod.

cheers for the response. Why is that?

Don't mean to disagree here but i use a 525mag with a FS rod without any problems...well i didn't think i had any until now? Is there something i should know? I just thought the rings were a bit diffrently spaced on essentaily the same blank? :?:

I have found that a fixed spool reel on a multiplier rod suffers badly from "ring wrap". This is where the line catches on the first ring on casting due to the large diameter and perpendicular angle that the line peels off the spool at. Also during retrieval the bale arm may cause the line to whip around the rod.
On a fixed spool rod, when using a multiplier, the distance between the rings is the main prblem, as the line can come in contact with the rod - but this isnt a major prob.
Hope that helps :D

Hi Bob while i agree with some of what you say re ring wrap this is mainly cuased by using to large and inexpensive fixed spool reels i have used fixed spools with multi rods for ages and find that the penn surfmaster range with their nattow spools okay and specially if you use the reel down this allows the coils to straighten befor they get to first ring, never had a prob with using multiplier on fixed spool rod and think line touching the balnk is negligable as where talking fishing and not casting long distance at a tournament then i would agree you need things working properly, in essence if you use a big fixed spool up the rod your gonna suffer wring wrap with the reel up cheers Rod.

I use a FS rod with a mulitplier reel and never had any issue. It offers me the freedom to change to a fixed spool reel if my multiplier birds or to use heavier breaking strain if the area is snaggy.

I use a 7ht with a diawa moonraker supreme f/s rod and an abu 6500 with a f/s rod, no problems here...

At the moment I use multiplier rods and usually use a FS reel on one of them. I am in the market for a rod and asked the Anyfish anywhere team about this. They say there is no issue with using the FS reel with their Multiplier rods. I have read a lot of reports on rods and it has been mentioned on a number of occasions that X rod is built for Multiplier but is OK with FS.
If it aint broken dont fix it.
