Hi and welcome to the site. Really it depends what type of fishing you want to do. There is Dunmore East (off the pier in the harbour itself) often throws up coalfish, pollock, mackerel, eels etc the harbour species. A long cast is not required here and a simple bait of strips of mackerel will be fine. Anotehr option in Dunmore is the Flat Rocks. Feathers and Lures work here for Pollock and Mackerel. You can ground fish here and I have caught Dogfish here on a strip of Mackerel, Pollock etc. Flaotfishing here in the summer with Rag you might well catch Wrasse or Pollock. With rock fishing a long cast is often not needed and basic equipment will do just be prepared to lose some traces weights lures etc.

There is also Beach Fishing available in Woodstown for Flatfish, Tramore, either the slipway/The beach in winter when no crowds around for the winter species bass,Cod included. There is another place, you turn off before entering Tramore, called Saleens, this is a popular spot for Bass fishing on either lures, or Lug cocktails when the seasons are correct. These are the areas around Waterford City, but theres also places further towards west,Dungarvan Clonea etc which I am not familiar with.

Me being somewhat of a novice myself I havnt all the anwsers but theres plenty of information here so dont be afraid to ask. We all had to start somewhere or do searches for the places I havne mentioned and it will give reports etc. Hope this was of some help, James.

Yea theres a link for the tide times on this site too so you can check that for times. I think its about 6.30pm saturday evening and a new moon as far as i know. The flat rocks can get busy during summer with people fishing for Mackerel although with the hurling match sunday it may be fairly quite there, if you dont follow the hurling that is! Let us know how you get on. Theres an angling shop there the old Tramore Road in near the Sony Centre etc they supple lures, weights traces, and he usually has bait there too. John O'Brien i think is your mans name that runs it, you could ask him too he will give you some good advice and may know of other spots around you can fish etc.

Did you fish here after friday evening? I went out about 7.30 for a look and a few casts. Fished the very end where its a flat slope, there was a right to left breeze and thought it might be sheltered here a bit. Saw a seal pop up in front of the 7 or 8 people fishing up the other end and then arrived in front of me. Tried to catch him but no luck!
Packed up to head up towards the near end into deeper water and saw one persons rod going and lifting a few mackerel. I watched for maybe 10 minutes or that to see was it just a few lone mackerel but everyone there was catching each cast so i set up beside them and caught a bag of mackerel. Been a while since ive seen it before and nice to see some at the flat rocks. Alot had sprats in their mouths when caught and you could see srpats and mackerel swimming in around the rocks in close on occasion. None broke the water though like they sometimes do in shoals. Some were smaller than other years now had a wet towel for taking the smaller ones off the feathers and releasing them, know your not supposed to handle them as it damages their scales and oily surface on them or something? It was the best I could do anyway.

To be fair I know we mention about certain nationalities keeping every fish they catch but there was F.N there and i saw on a few occasions lthrowing the small mackerel back. Fair play to those who did.

Went out friday about 16.30 and no room on the flat rocks so went down and fished off the pier, caught a load of mackeral and eneded up throwing them back in the end as i had enough for me. spent about 2 hours there and went back up to the rocks and still no room so went home. will try again this weekend and hope to get so space to get a decent go at it. :)
