worn rod spigot

Thu Aug 07, 2008 2:28 pm

I have a old daiwa moonraker and there is alot of wear in the joint its still usable but a bit annoying at times. I was wondering does anyone have any tips or tricks out there to tighten it up or is it just juiced. I was thinking of giving it to one of the lads as it would be a shame to dump it as rest of rod is perfect.

i am looking into a possible solution for this for one of my rods as the joint has not got much left in it...

there is this spray you can get called lacquer..for all the world it is like transparent spray paint....

so a light sand of the joint to rough up the surface and then apply a coat of this(a few if needs be) and leave to dry for a good few hours...

when it is dry sand down very lightly to rough up the surface again so it will hold better when it goes together..you may need to do some fine tuning to get things fitting well.

ill let you know how i get on after this weekend....
you can get the lacquer in any car shop beside the spray paint

BTW rubbing the joint with candle is a good temporary solution.

ya i'd just get the graphite spray. easy to use but make sure you use very thin layers. also leave it dry fully before checking for fit or you may end up with a nice 1 piece rod

im pioneering  I have heard of it being used on another site to good effect...

You could try cutting 5/10mm off the bottom of the tip section(if its female like the rest of the daiwas)...although this should be the last resort having tryed the graphite spray..iv done this with a few rods and it doesnt affect the action of the rod.

Cheers lads thanks fo al the replies some great advice there.
I might give gearoids method a shot over the wk end sounds like it could be worth a go. If not the carbon spray sounds the business.
Thanks again lads let ya's know how it goes.

1/ Anything you add to the male spigot will make it fit, but if it has a reaction you may never get it out again.

2/ Graphit spray wears off quite fast.

3/ If its only a little slack try candle wax first, enough anglers have used it in the past.

The way I was shown by probably the best blank maker in the world, is to take some 2-pack Pro-Bond glue....clean the male spigot first then apply some heat....smooth the glue around the male spigot by holding the brush or stapular and rotating the rod to get an even thin coat. Let it dry for at least 48 hours....gently sand by rotating the rod while you keep the wet and dry in your grip.....keep doing a little and try the fit until you get what your after.
