Going to Lanzarote next week and wondering does anybody know marks, species, etc. Hoping to take the fly rod and maybe a plugger

Wrongfont,

I fished there in August, the place is full of fish. The mullet (unlike our own) freely take floating bread off the surface, a small bubble float and size 12/14 hook about 18 inches from the float does the business. The harbour holds a huge amount of mullet but you can only fish from the start of the pier as their is no fishing signs everywhere else. Very light lines should be used as they shy away from anything above about 3lb mono, landing fish is easy from the slipway though.

The plug rod could double as both and a fixed spool with spare spool of heavier line is perfect as there is also barracuda in the harbour.

yep ID, the local kids had big rapala magnums trying for the baracuda.

One of the weeks I was there the annual big game fishing competition was on, I went down to the harbour for an hour or two every evening to winkle out a few fish and let the missus do some shopping, for the week of the comp the boats brought in "small tuna" between 30 - 50 lbs but on the last day the first boat had a hammerhead shark weighing 200lb + and another boat had a blue marlin, massive it was I think it was over 400lbs. All left hanging on the harbour in 30 degree heat while the "fishermen" went into the clubhouse to sip champagne.

The spanish could really do with a lesson in catch and release.

I was there last year and have detailed information on the marks around Puerto Del Carmen and also a name for an excellent local angler who will help - married to an Irish woman who runs a restuarant on the Island...

PM if you want more details.

FWIW...

I fished there a couple of years ago also, had lots of fun fishing with small hooks/baits (size 14) from the rocks. I found periwinkles were a good bait along with bread but thinking about it I should have tried squid as these fish can strip the hook in milliseconds!!
The variety of species available is great, I didnt catch anything huge (didnt fish for anything huge) but caught maybe 20 species.
I found it difficult to get gear over there so I would advise bringing anything you think you're going to need with you.

Also - I don't think you're allowed to fish inside the harbour in the old town so be mindful of that (or get up early ;)

Don't follow in my footsteps - earlier this year (on honeymoon!) I was 'escorted' by the police from the port in Barcelona for fishing (How was I to know 'isa nah pozzible to feesh ina port' ... Still managed to catch a few nice fish beforehand though!!

Good luck!

There's a small sports shop up the hill from the surf shop at PdelC (at the cross roads by the old town). Its worth a trip to Arriciffe on the bus. There are a few tackle shops. Take the bus, when you reach the plaza where they stop walk around by the sea shore (pass the big hotel). You will come to a dockland area where there are a few chandlers etc. there are 2 good shops in this area. Ask behind the counter and they will guide you to the next. The rods 'n' reels seemed expensive (boat gear anyway) but there is a huge range of traces and plugs at reasonable prices.
Enjoy!
Jim.
