mullet (driving me mad!!)

I've never caught a mullet but am trying my best and i just can't get one. Everytime i go fishing for them in wexford town, there's loads jumping left right and centre and they also just swim past me for fun all day! Anyone have any tips for me, i'd be really grateful for some help.

what you are using for bait, hook size, line type and breaking strain and if you are using floats or if you are fishing on the bottom, also what depth of water?
do the mullet stay in one area all day or do they move in and out with the tide, only staying in one spot for an hour or so? if so where do they go at high or low tide?
mullet are an odd fish, one day they will be feeding hard and the next they just seem to be playing or sunbathing.or one day you`ll see hundreds and the next you`ll hardly see any!
everytime i think i`ve got them figured out something changes leaving me scratching my head
give us some info and there should be someone on here who fishes in similar conditions and can offer some advice.

All so true. They've got to be the most fascinating and frustrating species of fish that we have. No wonder so many "anglers" say they're uncatchable......

I recently spent 6 days groundbaiting a swim with bread to get the mullet to hang around and switch onto bread as a food. That was 6 days of getting up at 05:00 some days to get them at the right tide, and being there going onto 11pm other days.

And it worked......a shoal of them were hanging about nicely in a pool, every so often 4 or 6 would dash off upstream but be replaced by another few arriving. I had it sussed to a window of about 1 - 1.5 hours before hight tide to 1 - 1.5 hours after high tide. Mind you, I couldn't see exactly what they were feeding on, but it was something midwater. Liquidised bread, I hoped.

Comes the 7th day, when myself and sandman go to fish them, their behaviour has changed entirely. No more shoal, only fish we saw were a few stragglers bombing past us after high tide, going against the flow of water. We blanked miserably.

Can't understand it. Or more accurately, can't understand them. :?

had a similar experience 2 weeks ago.
1st day arrived at a new spot with just the fly rod.there was a shoal of around 20-30 mullet hanging around one particular spot and they were mostly taking sunken bread, with only a few fish taking from the surface.i couldn`t reach them with the fly rod so had to just sit and watch them till they moved away with the tide

2nd day i arrived armed only with my float rod so i could trot a piece of sunken bread down to the spot they hang around.i landed 2 mullet, lost 2 more and missed a dozen bites. 8)

3rd day the mullet were in the same spot yet again,i landed 1,lost 2 and missed another handful of bites :D

4th day same story,landed 1,lost 2 and missed a few bites :D

i`ve haven`t caught a mullet from this spot since  i`ve tried morning tides, afternoon tides and evening tides and most days i hardly even saw a fish and any time there has been good numbers they just swam on past and didnt hang around like they did before :?
is it the difference in tide height? or the time of day that high tide is at? or maybe even the amount of freshwater coming down the channel? air temp? too much sun? not enough sun?

all i know for definate is that i still dont know everything about these grey ghosts, and probably never will :( but thats part of the fascination so i`ll keep on trying.
