Title looked familiar to me. I asked a question like this one last year.

There is also the ventry rig. Not sure now far this can be cast but at a guess not much further than 100yards.

On a related topics...

If you are fishing a rock mark into decent water i.e. lob casting and you have an offshore wind, look at paravanes used for pike fishing and similar techniques sued all over the world... including for sharks in New Zealand!

You can use a standard sharking balloon rig as well, wind never seems to be in the right place when I finally do get to the marks you could do it off!

FWIW

I don't think it would work for Mackerel if you were float fishing at distance on a beach, you need to strike quick when they take it, as soon as they feel any sort of weight they let go of the bait, you would have too much slack going on for a decent strike.
