trigger fish

anyone know were you can catch one of these on the east coast

Have never heard any reports on the East Coast. They seem to follow the Atlantic current upwards and end up off the West and South West Coasts. Deep Water Rock Marks in Clare and Kerry seem to be the best spots for them.

I caught one a few years ago on Ballymoney.....havent heard too many from the East Coast Beaches . . .they are more reef dwelling fish I think ?

They are a reef fish in the Med and off Portugal and Africa. I have read that they do not normally swim large distances. They end up in Ireland becasue the "ride" the push of the warm current through the summer and end up off the west coast. As the Water cools in the Autumn, they die off. Beautiful fish and very nice eating if you happen to get one.

Drop Bob Moss a line bootsy, he broke the irish record twice in 20 mins last year or the year before I think. I suppose if you fancy having a go for them in Dingle I'll have to drag myself along to be your nimble netman :wink: you'll probably find alot of lads willing to join your expedition 8)

I caught 2 last year on the slade side of hook head--1 in competition and the other pleasure fishing -- both around 2 1/2 lbs -- july + august. I was ledgering both times in close for wrasse using peeler crab. Hit + miss but nice to catch all the same -- good scrappers. I know south coast not east coast but i have'nt heard of any caught on east coast . They seem to favour rocky locations so maybe wicklow head might produce .

Saw one feeding near the surface down the steps at the lighthouse in Dingle in September last year. Sent a worm in on the end of a bubble float but no luck. Must have been a couple of pounds or more.

I fished the Safe last year in a club competition and my son Simon did a little pleasure fishing of the end of the breakwater and caught a triggerfish about 2.5lbs if that is any help. 8)

They seem to be making their way further around the coast each year... Thanks for the info guys. Very interesting. I would love to catch one of these fish off the Irish coastline on some light tackle. I only ever caught them on heavier stuff.

I was fishing Brownstown Head for pollock etc in July 2006. I caught 8 trigger fish just at the edge of the rocks with mac dangling on a hook. I didn t know what they were at the time , so I kept one for identification.
The weather needs to be warm and calm as far as I can see before you get them near the shore.

I caught a whole bunch of them (lost count) in Malin Beg in Donegal last August. I wonder if that's that the farthest north they've been caught?
