New BeachCasting rod.

Sat May 10, 2008 11:42 am

I'm going on a trip to Cork in July, so i'll need a proper beachcasting rod, as my bass rod may rod cast as far, even with the OTG cast. I'm also fearing that if I hook a ray/ huss my bass rod would double over and snap.
I Should have saved up £100 by that time, and if I do paper rounds I might have a bit more (I hope I don't have to resort to that).

At the age of 12 it would have to be 12ft and VERY light. And I don't want butts that require Shrek hands....

I'd be using my ABU 6500 Green mag elite, I really wish i could afford a Penn 525 mag for weedy marks.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

depends where your going in cork, most of the surf beaches dont require huge casts

New Rod

I'd stick with the bass rod. I catch most of my fish with my bass rod, and as Eric said, most fish will be caught within a short casting range.

i'd probably be around bantry for thornies, but i'll be around long strand, the warren and that hard to spell beach.
i also want one to practice casting

Save your money and stick with the outfit you already have Conor, should be OK for where you are going. Like eric said, huge casts are unnecessary. Good luck in Cork.

also, save up conor for a while and get yourself a nice rod, it will last much longer than one for a 100 squid and will serve you better too

I really only want one because I fear my rod will either:

a) Snap under the weight of a double figure bull huss

b) Not cast far enough with a 3oz lead + massive squid bait.

well my bass rod(greys bze) can put a 3oz bait and a whole squid 100 or so yards. and that's all you ever need for most things really.

i doubt you have to worry about your rod snapping, as usually its people putting too much pressure on the rod, not the fish. i doubt you will be able to exert that amount of force on the rod(no offense meant).

also, bear in mind that ANY 12/13ft rod will weigh more than a bass rod(unless your talking zziplex), so if you cant get the distance with the Bass rod you are unlikely to be able to get the distance with the 12/13ft rod.

if you are determined to get a bigger rod then the only light(in weight) one i can think of is the abu garcia suveran sx which i believe you can buy quite cheaply now. it was my first "proper" beachcaster(i think) and to be honest it was great.

i will see if i can some links of suitable rods for ya.

if you scroll down on this link you will find the daiwa sandstorm, good rod, but i think the butt might be a bit thick for you.

also i would look at these...they are quite light, but they're not ofthen sold at this price.

And im sure the abu reel will be up to the task.

Abu Garcia:
Beach SX 12' 9" 4-6oz 5' butt 7' tip & reducer 2 sections griploc adjustable reel seat - supplied in a good quality nylon bag £139.99

Daiwa:
Daiwa Sandstorm

Features:

* Stiff carbon butt with a flexible compound taper tip for maximum casting performance
* Super durable shrink grip with stainless steel coasters on all models
* Shock ring protected AlO lined guides
* Stainless steel coasters on multiplier rods
* Screw fittings on fixed spool models
* Yellow thread wrapped tip for improved visibilty
* Oversized rubber butt cap

Penn Affinity:
A bit big, but a possibility

Sat May 10, 2008 10:18 pm

well the affinity is so light you really dont notice the extra length.

also if you get the suveran(which i think is the best compromise of price, weight and peformance) i would advise you get some really good coasters and ditch the griplock crap. also the griplock is bulky which is a bad thing in this case.

the daiwa is good, cheap, but also a bit thick in the butt section so i dont know how suitable it would be.

Sat May 10, 2008 10:25 pm

How thick is the butt on the Daiwa??

Sat May 10, 2008 10:37 pm

i think its about 30-33mm which is slightly over an inch. in comparison the suveran feels about 2/3 of that.

conor check out the shakespear seriously you will be amazed i was ,,,,,,its an extremly slim butt to,,well in your budget and a decent caster

conor mate the sandstrom is a great rod, i have two, meet you at Glenarm you where fishing with your da and you'll need a slimer rod inorder to grip the abu spool, the sandstrom has a thickish butt

the shakespeare rods are either too expensive or long (above 13' 6" seems a bit long for me), or aren't built to use a multiplier reel.
but if there is a super light rod that you could use a multi with, i'd maybe buy one

your last post was a tadd unclear conor  the Shakespeare salt rods are designed for multipliers, there not too expensive and they are light, why not try looking for a second hand rod from the likes of conoflex or zipplex
