New Beach/Shore reel.

Sat Apr 19, 2008 1:14 pm

Am thinking of buying a new beach/shore multiplier and am looking for tips. What's the latest opinion on what I should go for. It's about 20++ years since I used one and that was one known as a 'Sea Streak' and I was very pleased with it. Know I'll be birdie-ing at first but cannot get any great distance with the FS; perhaps I'm just sh*t at casting :D

Any input greatly received.

Clean ground: ABU 6500
Rough Ground: Penn 525
Either/both in magged versions.

Or the Diawa 7HT, though I have no experience of this reel.

i fish mixed ground clean and rough, and have recently got myself a penn 525 its a cracker of a reel, took me a bit of time to get the feel for it, but now i have the mags set at fast, and it is great for getting a cast with distance, and its pulling power is great!!! you wont go wrong with the 525.

have had trouble with 525 'supermag', found 525 mag extra flawless, great real to cast and fish with. old 525 also good real, picked one up while back, have had no probs but 525 extra is a smoother cast in my own opinion

i have two 7ht's cant fault them great for clean ground. have an old 525 for heavy work and for rough ground.

7 ht, great clean ground reel, easy to cast

abu 6500mag, great clean ground reel, needs more TLC than others, great casting reel, great to learn with as has break blocks and mags

penn525 extra, great all round reel easy cast and almost bombproof

slosh 20/30, rough ground reel, easy to birdie

Hi Steve,

I'd go for the 525. Any of the mag versions should be fine. Although if you are new to casting multi's the extra has a couple of extra magnets which will help slow the spool down while you get used to everything.

Thanks for all the info & feedback guys.

I've sourced a 525mag from the states - 88yoyos and about 25 to ship. Just clarifying a few things and I think I'm flying.

Hi Hugh

These are the people http://www.alltackle.com/penn_525.htm

I am waiting to see how they will package the item and try to minimize any tariffs on arrival into the country.

I'll let you know how I get on.

What way did they calculate the charge? Is it on the full amount or is there a limit below which no charge is made.

Tried reading Revenue's web pages - gobbledy-gook - you end up going in ever decreasing circles until you disappear up your own jacksie. :D :D

22 euro limit, 44 euro if its a gift.

abu garcia 6500 florada mag elite. cannot fault it, unless your fishing over rough ground, you better get something stronger for that

how much would you be looking in the way of charges if you got a reel at around $150?? is it just worthwhile to buy from the local tackle shop???

just wondering will be looking to make a few purchases after final exams....

When you're buying from outside of the EU, you're going to be charged +/- 25% VAT and duty on the total amount including shipping / insurance costs, or at least that has been my experience of it. I know some stuff slips through but I've been charged every time. There more info about about the charges, gifts and that kind of thing here. With the dollar exchange rate at the moment its still probably worthwhile just remember to factor in the additional charges and the time you spend waiting for it to arrive.
