was down there the weekend for a pi$$-up and went to have a look at the harbour as a whole looks very fishy..
Especially the rocks to the left of the main beach on summercove looks like good bass fishing grounds??
not looking for specifics just what the area as a whole is like?
Thanks

lots of good spots around there, off the bridge outside of town for cod, coalies and the odd bass.
in front of the Bullman pub for dogs, some conger I hear and flounder.
and some excellent fishing over by the old castle.
the harbour itself has loads of mullet in the summer, and the odd shoal of mackeral too.
you're right its a very fishy area and there are probably loads of spots around there that don't see too much pressure.

Hi Gearoid,
there was a time when this estuary was as good as any for Bass. Any side of the river from the mouth all the way up river produced. With the recent resurgence in bass numbers countrywide they should be showing up. However a certain factory upriver may have caused a lot more damage that people think.
Bass have being showing in the other estuaries around west Cork and the beaches close to Kinsale so why not.

cheers lads is the old castle charles fort or the smaller one across the water?? the main channel seems to run close to the bullmans pub side and looks very deep would defo fancy my chances off the beach at summercove at night aswel..one a different note the mackos i have caught off the pier in previous years were very fat and lazy like stocked trout wouldnt fancy eating them not the healthiest looking!!

Hav'nt heard of any bass been caught in the Kinsale estuary in years.
But then anglers are keen to keep these things quite as a small fishing fleet works out of the harbour.
The shore line on both sides is fairly rocky all the way out to th mouth.
Conger Rock, on the walkway between the Bullman and the Spannard was once a haven for anglers. Fishing in to the channel and on to mud/sand produced winter cod and whiting with plenty of dogs also.
The fort and slighty south of it has produced dogs and conger
Middle cove, now the boat yard plenty of dogs.
Lower Cove fishing on the southern side is one of the few places where you can fish at short distance and be fishing onto sand
One or two spot can produce thornbacks at times.
Out the end of the "long walk" you will get pollack and wrasse
Up river around the old bridge might be your best chance of catching a bass. You will also get flounder and silver eel here as well.
In general it's pure doggy country .
