Killorglin & Ring of Kerry

I'm renting a cottage for the second week of my holiday near Killorglin.
The only mark I have fished in the area is Kells ( and very good it was, too !).I also fished at Gleesk on the south-side:smashed by monster wrasse! I would appreciate any tips / information that you may have,especially about deep-water marks on Valencia Island. Bass are off
limits, but perhaps turbot can be found ?

Culoo Rock on Valentia is a deep water rock mark that can be bottom fished. It can throw up small ling to maybe 5lbs but is awash with mackerel bashers all summer long so fish it weekdays only.

Rossbeigh beach is the only place I can think of for Turbot. There's an old wooden skeleton of a boat buried up the beach. Try fishing from here or over the sandbanks out at the point.

plenty of small turbot to be had off most of the beaches from Gleesk to Rossbeigh. Try St Finians bay which nearly always throws up a few plus flounders. However do not expect much over a pound and a half. Fish baits and razor work well.
If you can get some fresh mackerel from Culoo as Liamo suggests then out at the point at Ross beigh can provide fantastic fishing, tope rays flounders dogs sea trout and Bass etc. although it looks like you are visiting during the close season for bass. Be prepared for a long walk though.

A long walk is no deterrent! As my pseudo suggests,I'm a mountaineer!
Does the point at Rossbeigh fish at any state of the tide ? The geography suggests that deep water is close in. Any other advice would be gratefully
received.

Three years ago, the mackerel arrived at Kells towards the end of May.
Probably a safer bet than Culoo, if conditions are doubtful.I don't want to be another accident statistic !

What else can Culoo throw up ?

You can drive 9/10's way down back rossbeigh-just you gota know wen to stop the car. I done it in the mrs bucket of sh_t micra without a bother,that is to say I drove her down back of rossbeigh like!!!!
watch out for the odd rocker(I busted a cv shaft on front left doing dougnuts in the aforesaid micra), boy racers and suicidal sheep (it can't be that bad being a kerry sheep like!).

If you have a 4 x 4 or bucket of sh_t micra you can drive out a good bit if you wish. The fishing ground is clean so travel light and the walk will be good for you. You have a good range of depths and conditions hence the wide range of species. Facing the open sea there are plenty of sand bars etc the channel its self has good depth and there are a number of points which have deep water.
I find the last two hours and first three hours of flood the best. This will also give you a good idea of where the deeper parts are. These can be targeted again at high water. If its end of May you are fishing then weed should not be too much of a problem. Bring peelers and lug along with the fish baits.

Personally I detest Culoo, Its is usually dirty, over crowded and dangerous. I usually bring my kids fishing so that place is currently out of bounds. However if someone was to put in the effort it should produce all the usual rough ground species. The charter boats anchor up close enough to rock and there is a massive depth of water there. They catch big conger, pollock, cod and on occasion skate. If you were to use heavy tackle and ledger a big mackerel bait then anything is possible.
However if its the regular species like wrasse, pollock etc then the area around the lighthouse is a nicer place to fish. Just watch out for the mink who will mug you for your bait and any fresh mackerel you might catch.

Aug can be a funny month. if the weather is fine then Ross beigh will be crowded. Fishing into dusk will be your best option then and the usual dogs, small flats will be willing to oblige. You also stand a good chance of a ray and bass as well.
If the weather is bad like it usually is, then you may get a good surf and some bass running.
However Glenbeigh is well located and you are only 20 miles or so from Valentia where there is excellent rock fishing. All points in between also contain some excellent marks.
Send me a pm later in the year if you wish to see what is happening. We had a bad case of red tide a few years ago which had a major detrimental effect on the fishing in Aug.
