Nice fish Rog,
Fairly common I reckon especially this time of the year, think there just very well fed from all the sprats available. Lucky fish all the same, had I got him I would have sorted that bend out with my filleting knife :)

Hi Guys,
This condition of twisted or deformed spines in fish is quite common in farmed hatchery reared fish and less so in wild fish. Its reffered to as Kyphosis or Scoliosis depending on where in the spine it ocours. Its caused by vitamin deffiency in the fish during larval stage. So this Cod was missing something in its diet as a young lad. All fishes can have this problem not just Cod. Unusual in the wild for one to survive this long as he would not be a good swimmer making him an easy target for predators.

Used to catch a lot of these cod when boat fishing off Muck Island (Co Antrim) when stocks were plentiful. Portavogie boats caught them in certain areas of the North Irish Sea. They were sold at the fish market and considered to be quite normal, although I never saw any more than about three pounds weight.
