6/0-8/0 Hook, strong type sakuma mantra or mustad uptide, 50-100lb wire to the hook,100lb rubbing leader to your 100lb shockleader...they are my tope rigs...remember to have strong swivels, 150lb or 200lb

Hi,

6/0 hook is loads, would prefer ordinary vikings to C&R Meathooks or similar - something not too thick in the wire as you will usually be striking at range.

18" 80lb wire bite trace minimum and don't go below 80lb for rig bodies and leaders. I have seen them tail slap 60lb leaders and cut them straight through - not a nice way to lose a fish!

Get fresh bait if at all possible, they can be very very picky.

My favourite rig after a few seasons of fishing for these things and trying everything has to be a short running paternoster. For the swivel that runs along the leader and holds the lead use an out sized boat swivel. This will allow the fish to run and to take as much line as it likes and the big leader knot will run through the swivel and allow the fish to continue running unhindered. This rig/theory works very well. The reason I keep the rig short is to minimize the chance of the rig tangling - if it twists over on itself even once, all that extra sensitivity and the ability for the fish to pick up the bait and run unhindered is lost
