rig building

Tue Feb 26, 2008 12:02 pm

ok this ones going to have a lot of questions but I refuse to had over any more euros for prebuilt rigs (3 euro a shot )its just annoying me

I can do the knots now so i just need some advise on the product and where to buy (veals?)

Shockleader which line
leader which line
snood which line (have the anmesia 9.1kg clear)
which swivels
which clips
which hooks

which weight mould to buy

i reckon i will only be making 3 hook flappers until i understand it more and get more confident with the knots and rigs

one last thing whats the most popular mainlline every time im in the shop there seems to be mountains of choice

I was going to buy all this at the angling show but as every one knows it was a waste of time out there

sorry for all the questions

Hi Derek, have a look at the tips and tricks section there is a topic on rig building with some very useful sites. Most of your q's are down to personal choice.
I am not too fussy about shock as long as it is clear and 60-70 lb, Sakuma do a nice one.
Main line Sakuma nite crystal or Suffix tritanium
leader, I like amnesia but will retie rigs after each use

thanks man

i know every one will have a personal preference for all theese things. but as i dont yet i need to start with the middle ground until i find the ones that i like

I,m like a kid in a candy shop looking at all the lines and kit
would be nice to have a general idea of what i should get so i can buy it on line. without a sales person adviseing me what to buy so he can get rid of old stock

Derek,

Have a look at:

Here's a few quick answers to your questions, just my opinion:

shockleader
any really just pick a good brand, I prefer clear in 60lb or 70lb, buy a bulk spool will do for shockleader and rig bodies and lasts longer and is cheaper!

leader which line
as above?

snood which line (have the anmesia 9.1kg clear)
Amnesia in 9.1kg and 11.4kg clear; Seagur Carbon Pro or PLine fluoro in 10lb, 15lb, 20lb

which swivels
all major online vendors do swivels; size 10 (or 45lb) for snoods and size 4 (100lb) for top of trace. Sizes vary so BS of swivels might be a better indicator.
Some do snood swivels with a round eye and diamond eye - do not like the mustad version of these, diamond eye too pointy and find it breaks snoods at the knot

which clips
Gemini Genie Rig clips and Link clips - foolproof.

which hooks
Kamasan's leave Mustad in the dark for sharpness especially over the course of a session but suffer from rust more

pat, is this common to rebuild rigs after each use by retying EVERY knot?

the shockleader i'm using right now is bright orange, is this likely to scare away the fish? is that why you suggest clear leader?.......

hi jalfrezi, i usually cut all the snoods of a rig and retie fresh snood line with new hooks

i see, cheers. the other knots on your set up are okay to reuse until the line itself becomes weak......

always give the rig body a good pull before retying to check for weaklinks, knots are usually grand

Look out for the hiro rig components like the swivel's with crimps attached it saves you buying a load of small beeds crimps etc for snoods,

main line

I use suffix tritanium on most of my reels from 12lb to 18lb. Its thin and tough . On clean to patchy ground . I recently had a snag on the 15lb and had a job to pull for the break . I straightened the kamassan size two hook and it pulled free. :D Very strong line . Cheapest way to buy it is in a jumbo spool . Definately a 5* line and the best i have used in 20 years of shore fishing. Also casts well.
