5 days in may

hi lads i fly into cork early may for 5 days has anybody any ideas where i should base myself hopefully to catch a few fish cheers gary.

Around bantry bay would be fine, but i don't know about much around there.

hi lads thanks for the replies i will be using public transport and possibly bicycle i am not fixed to the cork area just looking for a base where there is a chance i could catch a few , i do abit of everything rock ,beach plugging and saltwater fly ,hope you can help cheers gary.

The problem is that most of the best fishing spots (especially for SWFF, lure fishing, etc.) are going to be quite remote and won't be serviced by public transport. Some of the the locals might be able to point you towards some spots nearer the city ...

Some of the best marks are well off the beaten track, and with such an indented coastline, you are lucky if there is a road never mind a bus!

I was thinking that Courtmacsherry would be a good bet for lure and fly fishing for bass and mullet, macks and there is some good rocks... some of the local Cork boys might PM you. Blaker is an expert on Courtmac.

I agree that Courtmacsherry might be your best option if you don't have a car. There are plenty of marks within walking distance of the village.

A bit closer to your arrival, when you know what days you will be over here and assuming you are staying in, or close to Courtmac, and I am not too busy with work I would be happy to drive down and take you out to some good rock marks I discovered last year - one was great for pollock and has wrasse there too. I have had some good pollock, a few coalfish and lots of mackerel from another. It probably also has dogfish and wrasse. Both are not the easiest to get to - you need to do a bit of scrambling over the rocks. I was intending to head down to those sometime in May anyway so I would be passing Courtmac on the way.

However, it would depend on the weather if the seas are rough both marks don't fish well at all and one would be dangerous in high seas.

Recently somebody was telling me about a good bass mark in Courtmacsherry Bay so that might be an option if there was a good surf running.

As the guys say, I'm sure Courtmac is great (never fished there myself), but hear good things....
If you are staying nearer to Cork city, then give us a shout nearer the time and someone will let you know what is happening and I'm sure will sort you out with something (I know I'd be only too glad to take a day off from work and escort you to some marks). Probably doesn't help if you are trying to get accomodation booked, but if you get near the coast you'll definitely find some marks around anyway.
