Where to go when you don't know.

Just started fishing last summer and was delighted to catch lots of mackerel gave me the buzz for more but the thing is although everyone is telling me the winter is great fishing, my luck has not been good, as I have gone on about 6 trips and have only caught 2 Pollock beside golf course in wicklow last November and have caught nothing else since...Iv being using lug and squid with my new beach caster.

So can someone let me know a spot where I might catch something would love to catch a cod codling or a whiting... I know I'm just fishing in the wrong place cause of lack of experience I live in Dublin and can travel to wicklow arklow area. Any ideas let me know.

I'd say any of the Wicklow beaches in darkness should produce plenty of whiting, might not be that big but if you are just looking to catch.

Someone else might be able to give you more specific info.

Dun laoghaire harbour /killiney beach / bray harbour / greystones harbour / and wicklow harbour.
these are just some of the very handy venues within a short drive for you to get a start.

plenty of whiting mixed with codling coalies rockling and odd dogs mixed in
most of these places through up the occasional surprise esp after dark :wink:

There are lists of shore marks available here;

If you look up a specific mark you can then do a search of the shore reports/site to see if there is a recent report of how it is fishing or put up a post asking if anyone has fished it recently.

Another Question we've had a look at some of the beaches along to coast but with not having a very good cast yet, I'm wondering is it worth my while I was told you can only catch flat fish on the beaches is this true..
Normally my friend and I look for rocky outlets hoping the water will be deeper....like the south end of brittis bay or the rocky end of killiney..does anyone know any more places like these.

We fished some of the piers there great but we prefer the natural surroundings, I think though.. if we don't catch something soon we'll be back to try them again.

you dont need a huge cast to catch fish - especially at night - they can be right at your feet!

Don't worry too much about not having a big cast, Not every fish is caught 200 yards from the beach there are a surprising number of fish caught in the suds at your feet. Don't be afraid to vary your casting distances because where the fish are will depend a lot on the layout of the beach. If it is possible you could scout a beach a low tide, you can look for likely areas for food to collect like natural troughs or trenches, look for lug beds, rocks or seaweed beds, draw a map or memorise the layout and then try to cast to those areas later.

most of the fish are in close on Kiliney etc the main thing to do is get the tide correct. if you fish it from low water up you are bound to catch something.

try dropping a few hook sizes as well bud size 1 or 2 will do for most of the fish from kiliney to wicklow.

i was fishing kiliney on monday and the whiting were only 1o yards out once the tide had started to flood back in. on the dropping tide they were a little further out.

Going to try a new venue...
The plan is to head out to Arklow south beach tomorrow morning it seems from the forum this is a good place to catch... Has any one been on this beach... whats it like is there any rocky areas to fish off..

Bait:Mackeral,lug


Rigs: one hook rig.


Results: 2 small whiting 3 good size whiting and a shrimp caught on a spinner.

we went out on Saturday the 16 of feb to arklow south beach..went up to the man made peer beside the quarry had a good day caught a few whiting and a shrimp on a spinner whats the chances of that :D
