Crab traps / tyers

I very recently (for my first time) put out a number of tyers hoping to get some crab for bait
Today I checked these tyers and found crab in them, none of which were peelers I think. The crab that were in the tyers were common shore shore crab I think and very active i.e. pinching mad (is it true if they were peelers that they would be alot more slow moving )

My question is what should i do with the crab I found in the tyers,
do I drop them back into the tyers and hope they will start peeling at some stage ?
do I take them out of the tyers and leave them go ?
do i take them home and try and force them to peel (if so how do i do that ?)
or what else do i do ?

APPLYING SOFT PRESSURE TO THE SIDES OF THE CRAB WILL DETERMINE WETHER THEY ARE PEELERS WITHOUT DAMAGING THEM,DROPPING THEM BACK IN THE WATER IS SUFFICE AS THEY WILL MORE THAN LIKELY MAKE THEIR WAY BACK INTO THE TYRES,PERSONALLY I WOULDNT RECOMMEND TRYING TO BRING THEM ON DUE TO THE HASSLE,HOPE THIS HELPS :lol:

the common crab u found in ur tyres are peelers
there just not peelin yet, but placin tyres is all to do wit were u put them
and u might only get crab in them certain times of year, place some tyres in different areas look for a mixture of rough and soft ground and place ur tyres on the soft patches in between rough, do a few strings of 5 in different places, i use heavy duty cable ties to bind them and cut holes in tyres so the water can flow threw and stake them down,
iv had lots of sucess wit tyres, so do as i say and keep in touch to let me know how u get on and wat ur doin and if i can help i will and let me know when ur main peelin times are because i dont get any in my tyres when the females are peelin iv to search weed to get a number of crab

listen to this man about crabs he is one of the bait people who knows what he is talking about,,

yes when crabs enter the later part of the peeling stage they become sluggish, youl also notice the shell is dull in colour and very brittle. the best way to test to see if it is a peeler is too twist off a leg and pull it apart gently, if its a peeler a new soft under shell will come exposed, if its just white sinew then its not. :wink:

Catcher, some good advice there but I would recon that alot of the crab you got in your tyres were hardbacks and not Peelers. Usually when I check my tyres I get a ratio of Hardbacks to peelers of about 10:1.

Just twist the last segment of the back leg of the crab, if it comes off and there is a soft fleshy leg underneath then it is a peeler, however if all that is there is white sinew then it is a hardback.

Generally peelers will be fairly docile but can also be quite active depending on how far along they have come. If you have only recently put your tyres down then it could take a while for them to start producing to their maximum. A bit of weed growth helps and also fresh tyres stink of rubber.

I saw in a post above about cutting holes in the tyres to let the water out. I was told on good advice that the tyres should hold water if possible. Which is it!?

I'm surprised tyres are still used for peelers. They make the shore real ugly, I'm surprised someone hasn't come up with a more efficient design for a crab trap. A good flat rock will produce way more crap if left in a pool that retains a couple of inches of water at low tide.

BTW if you place anything on the foreshore you need a foreshore license from the Dept. Agriculture, Fisheries & food. (crab traps, moorings incl)

i cut holes in the top of mine, basically a section of about 3 inches long and half an inch wide is cut from the top of the tyre.

from what i was told it was to allow the air trapped by a rising tide escape and helps prevent the tyre from lifting

i got metal stakes made up about 1 meter long
and i staked them down each end off the string and i just cut a few slices
about 1 inch thick on top of tyre and when u put them down make sure the tied is rising because when the water comes in around them u hav to give them a shake or stand on them to take traped air out or they go belly up and it can help to put big stones in them just till they settle and dig in,,,,,, and for peoplr who dont know all common shore crrab are peelers u might come across hard backs there peelers but just a long way off from peeling ,a crab has to peel to grow, but alwsys throw them back u wont bring them on ur self they just die

are tyres not toxic???

well i tink wit all the s*** wat gets pumped into the sea evey day i tink a few tyres are the least of the sea,s problems

do you take crab that are just on the edge,use of correctly set up tanks will help you can take the bullets then and 80 % will come on to peel but knowing which crab to take and place in the tank is one for the experienced eye and time of year and weather conditions has a profound effect on moults

but to a new comer id advise to tske crab on there way,
but i wouldn do a tank i like goin out on a scalp good exercise,

I showed henry my tank about 6 weeks a go ,hes spreading the word already,,

had a feeling it was urs wen u said it
but i told henry the only time i cant get crab is june july well i can but there females and carriers, i look after him wit crab mostly frozen did **** all last year, but im gonna get me finger out tis year,my name is darren ryan by the way, wouldn mind a look at ur set up some time, the way henry descrided it sounds cool
