fishing in bannow

Paul---there are some excellent bass fishing areas around bannow bay but it has to be remembered that the sandbanks change dramatically each year. The aerial photograph depicts an area that has not fished well for a few years and i favour the other side of the bay towards the entrance of bannow island. When you enter wellingtonbridge from the wexford side do not cross bridge but take a left by the pub--head out on the bannow drive past the estuary on your right and straight on for about a mile until you reach a t--junction .turn right at t junction and head for bannow island--around 3 miles--when you see the old church on your left take a right down to bannow island. there is plenty of parking -- head over the bank and walk right towards the channel for about 10 minutes --you can fish anywhere along this channel either ground bait or spinning--there is a huge run on the channel and i find the optimum time is to start 3 hours before low water when the tide is easing off. The top bait is peeler crab as you meet the bass coming out of estuary. If you ever saw the 'fishing on the edge programme' with henry gibney and graham hill this is the spot that graham hill referred to as 'bass alley' and can produce great fishing at the right time. Do not fish this area on big spring tides as you will not hold bottom or be able to spin.

By the way most of the crab traps that are referred to in previous posts on this subject do not belong to Mr Hill but myself and a few friends. I would appreciate if the ethicate of crab collection can be respected by all concerned.

[Note from JD There is more here http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bull ... hp?t=15130 on this but Brian later said
Hi All,
I had a good talk with Graham Hill in Bannow today and i can honestly say that that he is disappointed with the accusations being made about him taking crabs from other peoples traps. He showed me all his traps today and he has more than i realised. This was also evident from the number of crabs he had in his bucket which all came from his own traps as i was witness.

He told be that he does not do anyboby else's traps and i have to say that at this point i believe him. Maybe someone else is doing traps knowing that Graham will be accused??????. Only time will tell.

Anyway I think it is time to give the man a break and see what develops over the next few months.

Yours in Fishing

Brian ,,
thanks for that Brian ,,
and i will reiterate to all them doubting thomases out there it aint me!!and i would actually suggest you look elsewere if your traps are getting robbed,,
but what i will say which is relevant to the thread is to get the best out of your traps you got to work them , and heres a few pointers to sucessful crabbing
there are not only tyres used as traps, there are ridge tiles and also chutes,,
the chutes are the only way to get crab in the depths of winter where tyres and tiles are usless use black or white or grey chutes do not use orange!!!!and set them as close to waters edge as you can ,try to work out the crab run on your particular beach, the crab do not come in on mass with the tide they run in in lines , like fish run up a gulley ,find one of these and you will never go without great bait,,
the ridge tile are again a movable trap on a beach ,great in early spring /summer as are tyres but a big mistake a lot of guys make is setting tyres and other traps too far away from the low water line this makes them redundant in the winter months and on the big tides,,
this is why the bannow is such a special place it has every thing great bait yellows blacks maddies,Bass,Gilthead bream colies ,flounder sea trout even got triggers last year its got the lot and i will fish and gather bait in this place till the end of my days because it is so special,,,
but things dont come easy you have to work at everything and keep cleaning them traps for the best results
:D :D :D

Paul as i said i will show you round if you like, there aint many know the area like me but no response from the post!!! ,,but to ask for certain marks down the bannow is realy a very foolish and foolhardy question ,,you are not fishing off rock you are not fishing of a set in stone storm beach,,,moving sand, quick sand very ,very dangerious tide rips for the inexpirenced angler asking questions of marks a death trap!!!!!!!! 8)
