Lab Tests on Line

Ever think that your line is breaking too easily, well this is probably with good reason. Below is a link to some findings by EFTTA (European Fishing Tackle Trade Association).

Here is a brief summary of their findings.

11% tested achieved or were better than their stated breaking strength

5% tested had more than 50% less breaking strength than declared

36% tested had between 30% - 50% less breaking strength than declared

26% tested had between 20% - 30% less breaking strength than declared

22% tested had up to 20% less breaking strength than declared

83% of the lines tested had all samples below their stated breaking strength

9% of the lines tested had some of the samples below their stated breaking strength

8% of the lines tested had samples that achieved their stated breaking strength

makes you think, some fish lost in the past may because of flautly line, had a look and the lines i use came up ok, better than stated bs

very interesting.always thought daiwa tournament broke hight than they stated when compared to other lines. pity ultima red ice wasnt tested, would be interested to see what that broke at

I'd say nearly all the lines from the major manufacturers like Ultima, Berkley, Suffix, Daiwa, Maxima, Sunset Amnesia, Penn etc are OK.

These narrow diameter to BS lines seem to be a bit of a marketing ploy by some manufacturers. Technology has brought down the average diameter to BS of lines but as can be seen from the report people are overstating this rise in BS to diameter.

I know someone that uses 60lb teklon Gold as shock leader and rig body, Must be really only about 40lb BS. I will be letting him know.

Its a pity that there is not a standard mark that all lines should have to make.

Thats a bit uncanny, I was actually going to fill one of the spare spools with teklon for the weekend......don't think I'll be bothering now. Thanks John :wink:

i know there is the horror scenario of the fish of a lifetime being on and the line lets you down - but i think there has to be common sense here also

when your making rigs, tying knots, loading reels (pulling for breaks, cracking off! :lol: ) etc. you get an idea of the quality of the line overtime and know what rubbish to stay away from
