I know most people including myself would normally use makeral to tip off worm baits..am just wondering if you couldnt get makeral, have you had any sucess on any other fish baits? (i know about squid and that.. i only mean other FISH as bait..) ???

dont forget herring makes a great bait and it freezes better than mackeral if you can get it fresh  you also have sand eels.
i have often used whiting as bait for various species.
dont be afraid to try different things.

They use schoolie bass live baited to catch large bass in the UK regularly enough, I suppose the fillets would make a good fish bait also.

given the declining number of mackeral and herring stocks in our see i am trying to bo my bit by using other species.
also as you are not keeping the bass, and are returning them to the sea (all be it piece by piece), it doesnt count towards your daily bass quota

stir it up there Paul.
In truth though they are used as a live bait in the UK for larger bass.

Garfish and scad are good but often unused fishbaits, scad is tough and a whole gar cut in half make a meaty conger or ray bait. All manner of things have taken the scad and we've taken congers and small ling from the shore on the garfish.

juvenile whiting make a good bull huss bait and if i can get them through out the winter 6 inch pouting are a great huss and conger bait in the summer. also as pete said garfish makes a very good alternative to mackeral..

trying to cheer myself up as im deep in the midst of study is all
i have never tried, nor do i know anyone that has. i would seriuosly doubt it would be productive due to the low oil base and the fact that i doubt bass is top any too many menus.
hope i upset a few people though
