frozen lug how best to use it?

Tue Nov 27, 2007 11:57 am

I have bought frozen lug many times and indeed the first time i bought it the guy in the tackle shop said it was the fillet steak of bait! But every time I have it i lose confidence in it for a number of reasons. Firstly when i put the worm on the hook. I slide it all the way up the hook and line and then put a piece of razor/squid/mack on the bend of the hook with elastic to keep it slipping off. It looks like nothing like a worm! when I reel in it looks like a sausage skin! So basically for quite a bit of money Im using something I dont have much confidence in> Am I using it in the right way any tips or methods of using it i should try?

I generally use a baiting needle but some times i fold the worm in half and wrap it with elastic this gives a deep lug sausage seems to work well when tipped with mac or squid!!! but fresh lug works way better!!

For scratching I use around an inch long section on size 4s. Larger hook sizes I`ll up this. Either thread on baiting needle and wrap in elastic then onto the hoor or needle the bait in and out through the point with a small wrap of elastic.

like Donagh I only tend to use small sections of this on small size hooks for flats, I normally let it get smelly and stinky too before using it.
If I was using lug long range it'd be live lug .......

never had any luck with it til i was told how to use it properly:

run the blade of a sharp knife/ scissors up the middle of the worm, leaving you with a sheet of lug.

cut into small sections of about 2-4 cms long and use to tip baits such as crab legs, maddies, fish etc. works well for flatties, codling coalies etc etc

Normally use it as a scratching bait tipped off with mack or maddies. As the lads said a 2" section cut and then slid onto a baiting needle and whiped with bait elastic works.

Another way is to again cut a 2" section and nip the hook point through a few mm's from the top, then twist the section of black around a few times and pass the hook through again, repeat this 3-4 times and you get a bit that will not slip down the hook point into a lump of slop.

You should get a good 4-5 scratching baits per worm. Excellent this time of the year for many species. Hope this helps.

Thanks all for that i think i have a better idea now how to use those now. think i was putting too much on. What do you do with a baiting needle? is it ealastic you use with it is it an ordinary needle but bigger?

nah its a thin piece of metal hollow one end to stick onto the pointed end of the hook - the other end is pointed and you stick the worms on there

can bang on 3 on the needle first and then easily glide them onto the hook

great for hammering on a ball of lug

When baiting up with lug don't be afraid of it looking like a sausage, the fish can smell and taste it all the same.
