"We only got about 2.50 euro per kilo for the blue shark, which will probably sell for 10-15 euro per kilo at market."
wasnt even worth that much to them - are things really that bad???
complaining about getting smaller ones, then the instant you get a big one - take it
wheres the logic :x

what a waste, how much will an angler pay to catch one of those sharks, then come back to do it the following year?

Poor buggers would have most likely been dead when they came up in the trawl anyhow. Surprised though to see actual bottom trawler actually picking up the sharks, normally they can outswim the trawl itself and you would only see the odd spurdog in the catches. Have seen alot of 'real' shark end up in gill nets though, lots out of Dunmore and Dingle, particularly porbeagles.

Hi Pete
Good point, rare enough to see bottom trawlers take sharks, and that there were four big ones suggests they might have been collected around something, maybe feeding on the carcase of a whale or something?
I know a few lads in Dunmore and Tramore who have had fun with blues late in the season when they found a floating (bloated) carcase offshore.
FWIW

Its a weird one Kieran, seals quite often ride with the trawl and can sit down in the mouth of it picking of fish as they get washed down. I doubt know of any evidence of sharks behaving in the same manner but there isn't really any reason why they wouldn't exploit the same opportunity  Interesting one alright
