penn mag 525 bearings

I finally stripped and cleaned my mag 525 last night after 3 years of utter abuse and neglect. I'm just wondering is there a way of getting the bearings out? I didn't want to force them, and after doing a quick search on the forum this morning, it seems people generally find it difficult to remove the bearings. Any advice on how to get them out would be greatly appreciated. Also if someone could suggest a brand of grease for regreasing the rest of the reel? would vaseline do?!

The spool bearings can be difficult to get out. I use a tweezers by squeezing them to place them in the hole of the bearing. Then releasing them so the preesure is pushing out at the inside of the bearing to grip them. If their really stuck you can use the spindle to work them out from the other side. I got one reel I had to tap out one bearing with a piece of wooden dowl and a mallet the first time of disassembly. Neil Mackellow has a home made tool that he uses. If you get in contact with hime he will send on a diagram.

As for oiling red rf on all the bearings and water proof grease on the rest. Most reel manufacturers can sell you their own grand of grease. I got my penn reel grease from veals.
I'd leave the Vasiline for what ever use you normally use it for :o

Be careful with the assembly of the spring around the anit-reverse leaver as this can be tricky.

Ha, sound Donagh! I just remember reading in an old fishing book to use vaseline to grease reels. I'll take the reel apart again tonight and try the tweezers trick. I wasn't sure if i should force them last night, bit I'll chance it again and see what happens. taking it apart was suprisingly easy, once you take your time and lay the various bits and pieces out in order.
