St. John's Point

Hi all,
I'm back home in Ireland for a weeks holidays. Was hoping to get some fishing in, as I spent many days on St. John's Point in Donegal in June for a week spinning for mackeral and pollock. I realise the mackeral are probably gone at this stage, but is it still possible to spin for pollock at this time of year?

I enjoy the bit of fishing but am no expert, on other baits etc.

Any tips or feedback on fishing at this time of year would be appreciated.

Be the same as what you were getting in the summer, water temps in the bay were 15 degrees last week so expect the usuals. More scad around at the moment too.

was at st johns point a few months ago, ground was very rough an ended up loseing a lot of gear,iam not one for spinning, i like to use bait,so i put on a float,could hardly belive it, got a 15 pound conger on the float.got a great fight an released it back safely!! :roll:

Headed down to St. Johns Point last night but was really rough sea down to left of the lighthouse where I normally go, so drove back along the right but by the time we found a space it wasa getting dark, did about 20 mins overall but nothing.
Went to Creevy pier this evening but just 4 poor cod (I think) that I returned. Anyway will keep trying have another few days yet.

I think you were at Creevy when I was fishing last night. All I got was a small coalie (deeply hooked) and a few very small pollock (returned) - spinning. I stayed for an hour after it got dark. I tried spinning, floating and bottom fishing on ragworm tipped with mackeral. All I got was half a dozen pouting and a couple of small pollock (all returned). It was disappointing considering the very high tide and sea roughness, particularly since it has recently been calm.

I got a bit fed up after a couple of hours..One too many waves came over the peer and the feet were soaked!

Went down to St. Johns Point again today, twas too dangerous really, sea was well rough. Found a sheltered spot but got nothing.

Have you any tips for fishing at creey at this time of year? Whats to be got and what bait to use etc. What has your experience been? I don't normally go there, but I had a handy lift the last evening. If its worth while I'll take another trip down.

Thought about Creevy for this evening but it seemed too rough. From the pier, I would spin with red feathers until dark (they seem to catch pollock/coalies) - and if mackerel are around, they will also take. Float fishing 5-10 yards out with mackerel strips catches pollock/coalies. On the bottom - cast straight out from the end of the pier to avoid rocks or in an arc round to the lamp posts across the bay near the cottages. Lug tipped with mackerel is good (or rag - but there is no local supplier).
