Martin,
Fished the Mersey (Otterspool) a couple of years back prior to a comp. Myself and a couple of team mates. We were using lug / rag / crab and bites were hard to come by but we were catching a few whiting.
However, an old fella arrived along with his shopping trolley, rod and a bag of Tesco's finest frozen prawns  - yep you guessed it he landed nearly a fish a cast and some good size ones amongst them.
Needless to say we added some frozen prawns to our bait list. Didn't disappoint - didn't win the comp either though
Give them a blast - you just never know.
