Has anyone used or had any success with whelks as bait....???

interested to hear other peoples thoughts on that too.
have been offered "as many whelks as i want" by a fisherman but before i stock up on them id like to know if they are any good

iv had good cod on them ,very good bait if you can get it :wink:

say there good after a good gale, like most shellfish, as a few would probably get knocked around die , fish would be looking for them then.

Are they the wee small snail like things?
If so I've found them to be a decent wrasse bait if you run out of rag or cant find any hard-backs!

think theyre periwinkles - good for the wrasse when your stuck alright :D

They work well in deeper water but never had much success on beaches with them. Caught cod, coalies and flats with them.

ive caught numerous cod who have had whelks in their stomach after storms
