Waterproof Clothing Are any Good????

Fri Sep 21, 2007 12:01 pm

Hi all,

I have been reading alot on the site about Waterproofs and in nearly all of the reports they tell of how they leak!!

Is there any out there that you would recommend I would like to get something for the colder days. I think Bib n Brace stile and Jacket would probably be the best.

Or Would I be better going for a floatation suit?

I would fish mainly off the rocks or piers but am going to get into beach as well.

I got the Anyfish Anywhere Jacket & Bib and Brace earlier this year. In the past it had some problems around the neck area but with the wonderful summer we had this year it got an extended work-out without any problems. So far this is one of the best pieces of kit I've bought.
They are not going to be as warm as a flotation suit but will not hamper your movements over rocks as much either.
Veals have a good deal at the moment;

I hope this helps,

have the anyfish anywhere bib and brace and unfortunatly mine leaked like a seive, the tape came away from all the seems. it was one of the earlier models and i think they had some teething problems so newer ones may be better. other than the lack of waterproofing they are and excellent piece of kit

i dunno about the trousers but for the jacket get a sprayway. they are expensive but well worth it. they are walking/hiking jackets and are deadly waterproof.

Take a look at some of the sailing stuff on ebay, Henri lloyd etc. Seems and looks like the business? although I cant comment on it as I've never tried it. Although it seems slightly more expensive it does look to be put together better so in the long run it should be better value. I'm like everyone else at present in relation to waterproofs. I've had the anyfish, titan, shimano bib & braces and they have all leaked! I'm now giving the Imax stuff a go to see what it's like. I can't really comment on them yet as I've only used them once. One of the guys in the club has the greys suit, looks the part and so far he says it's great, never leaks and fairly warm.

The imax smock leaked for me at the neck. That's where they all seem to go.

I don't understand why manufacturers have to have stitching at the neck area, it's just asking for trouble. The body and hood of the smock should be made from the one piece of material to eliminate the need for the stitching there.

I'm pretty sure that this problem has been eliminated in waterproof clothing for other outdoor activities.

John,

You asking for the impossible, if you seen what the parts that go together to make the hood, back and front of a jacket looked like you would understand. The best that can be done is to heat-seal the seams with tape, if done right then it wont leak. The early Titan jackets or smocks never leaked...not on my shift anyway

It would take to long to go into detail why some taped seams leak, but at the end of the day its down to a quality check in the factory, its not rocket science, there are a couple of tests that should be done on every garment before it leaves the tape assembly, never mind the factory.

Thanks for the responses!! Sounds like it is a bit of a lottery! Has anyone else had any good experiences with Fishing Waterproofs or Sailing/Hiking ones??

Hi I have a North Face mountain jacket dont use it for fishing but have used it for hiking and other out doors stuff and i find it brilliant doesn't leak very good hood its about €400 I got it when I was working in an outdoors shop. if you could find an american dealer that deliver to the eu you might get yourself a bargin with the current exchange rate.

North faces technical jackets (ie the expensive ones) are very good the same with sprayway. once you start getting into the serious ones they are very reliable.
