rod casting weight

Got a 2.75lb carp type rod recently. Not the greatest build but it's nice enough and am just wondering what sort of casting weight should it be able to handle?

col 2.75 lb. test curve will handle quite a bit weight wise depending on where you are fishing up to 5 ozs, my brother in law has a 2.75 spod rod and it could handle 5 ozs no problem.they are mainly used for big carp and pike fishing so most sea fish should be no problem at all.cheers john.

It really depends on the build of the rod. I would not like to try a serious cast with anything more than a couple of ounces. They can be a bit soft and are more suited to a lob than a belt.

The usual advise is as a rule of tum lbs TC convert to ozs. So a 3lb test curve carp rod is a 30z rod.

my brother in laws 2.75 spod rod is quite stiff,i have seen him cast 5 ozs with it no trouble at all,no bait just casting with it.if memory serves me right its 12ft. very slim but boy has it got some power. i am trying to get the same rod myself at the moment would do for a lot of sea fishing situations.pollocking and bassing even fishing for flounders and such.

Thanks for the replies, they provide a good guidline for me to go by. Sounds like the best bet is to give it a test, I'l start from 1oz and wok my way up. Its a Fladen one which retails between £60 and 90pounds sterling so its prob not the greatest quality but hope to use it for light scratching.

a spod rod is for casting spods ? not fishing with :lol: :lol:

my brother in law uses his for sea fishing and hasnot had any problems yet and has landed some good fish on it aswell.think he even used it in the boat a few times and its still going strong.!!!!

you'll have to excuse my ignorance, but whats a spod rod??

its used to launch a spod ,which is used to ground bait a swim for the likes of carp and stuff.you fill the spod with the ground bait and cast it out it tips up leaving a bed of bait to attract the fish,you then cast your bait in the middle of the ground bait and hope a fish takes it, a spod filled with a mix of bait weighs a fair old bit.!!!hope this helps

When Pike fishing I can "lob" 8oz or so with a 2.75lb rod. I wouldn't like to use for serious casting though. A Spod rod is much stiffer. I have never bought one, but being stiffer, it could be used to belt a lead or two.... A few guys use these types of rod for competive casting of 18g with a fixed spool.

I use pike rods all the time for rock fishing for Pollock and Wrasse..... A decent wrasse will put a nice bend in a 2.75lb rob, which makes the fishing a lot more fun. They pike or carp rods are also much lighter, so holding them for long periods of time is easier.

the idea came about after watching the world boat championships in downings 90% of the guys had rods which could only be described as beachcasters ,some of the welsh guys where using zziplex 4500hpm beachcasters.so after some reserch and talking to some of the contestants he went and bought a spod rod !!!!

casting and handeling fish is two different stores, you should not cast more than 3 oz with this test curve
