Tope off Enereilly?

Hi All,
I was thinking of concentrating on Tope from the shore for the next few weeks and as I live in South Dublin, was thinking of doing this in Ennereilly for a few reasons:

1) Years ago we would boat fish for tope off this beach (admittedly about a mile off shore!) with good results

2) I've noticed lately that with a good cast here you can reach a reasonably deep channel. When reeling back in you can feel tension as the sinker climbs back up to the shallower water on the retrieve.

3) Plenty of flat fish for the tope to feed off

4) Its approx 30mins drive from my house.

I was wondering if anyone has had any success on this beach for tope before? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

nope, have got pups on killiney beach using a slashed pin whiting smashed towards the horizon at night, your best bet for shore tope would be in a couple of months near winter. love to try ennereilly some time, even if you dont hook a tope you can be sure of a smoothie or two.

id say they are on the beach alright however i was fishing Rooney point there two weeks ago and missed one it stripped line off my reel twice i let it go on a run for a bit then i put a little presure on i had the fish for around 30 seconds then it was gone when i got my trace back i found that the hook point had twisted around when casting and that the hook point was inside the body of the mackeral i was using for bait. i got that run at high tide and its not the first run ive seen from that beach. if your considering trying for them try Rooney point or Rossalare point. then in around October Novemeber Kilcoole is a good bet.

Cheers for the reply - I don't think I'd need to wait till winter for the tope. Again, in the boats we caught them in the height of summer off Brittas Bay and Ennereilly so I'd reckon there's a good chance of them now? You were saying you'd love to try the beach some time - feel free to PM me any time if you'd like to tag along. I'd probably fish that neck of the woods once a week at the moment and I'll try to step it up to maybe 3 nights a week for the next while...

I'd dearly love to fish Rosslare Pt on a regular basis, but its a bit too far for regular journeys for me. I've never fished Rooney Pt though, and after you mentioned it I did a search on it - sounds like as good a place as any to have a go! Watch this space!

love your replies bovenip their so organized, we could all learn something from you :D yes it is true that there are a lot of tope out of the boats but that is because they are feeding of mackerel at this time of year and the like. the don't really need to come inshore until the mackerel migrate home, then they have to focus on other fish that remain here all year round such as whiting, flounder, dabs. just a theory i have but who am i, i would pm Brian cooke pronto! read a really useful article by him on the topic in hand in irish anglers digest. il try to photograph the pages and sent it to you.
