Dursey Island / Beara Peninsula

A group of us are planning a few days down to the Beara peninsula for the end of July.From looking at the OS map for the area there seems to be plenty of potential marks.

What time does the cable car onto Dursey island operate?

Any help with marks would also be appreciated, you can PM me if you like.
We would like to do a bit of rock fishing, beach fishing and mixed ground for Huss also.

Was just flicking through an old sea angler today and saw an article by Henry gilbey and julian shambrook on the beara. Didnt actually read it but it was in an early 2005 edition. March or April I think. There was a picture of one of em with a huss so there might be a mark or two in that if your stuck.

On one of his episodes of 'Fishing on the Edge' the two of them took the cable car to Dursey Island and fished for Wrasse & Pollack.

I remember a detailed report from last year from some guy and it should come up on a search for Beara or Dursey.

I fished a few marks around the Beara last year- June.

I enjoyed great sport at Dursey Sound, fishing almost underneath
the cable-car : coalfish, pollock and wrasse.

Fishing the strand at Balldonegan resulted in a blank, but it is a lovely spot. Spinning around the harbour gave a small pollock each cast !

I'm just back from the Beara - foul weather and lots of floating weed meant generally poor fishing, but I had a reasonable session on Zetland pier, between Adrigole and Glengarriff - 4 doggies and a small thornback (about 3lb) all on mackerel. The fisherman's Co-op fish shop on Castletownbere harbour sells nice fresh mackerel for 75c each if, like me, you couldn't find any from the rocks. Glengarriff harbour was alive with mullet but I didn't have my gear with me that day, alas!

Thanks for the replies, I remember seeing that Henry Gilby episode alright. He did a bit of pollock and Wrasse fishing on Dursey Island and then fished a mark for Huss on his way back to the ferry in cork.

The whole place looks like it has lots of potential but there does not seem to be much info on marks etc.. Will probably head down at he start of August for a few day. Will keep u updated.

That episode with Henry Gilbey going across to Dursey Island on the cable car didn't do that cable car any justice. :lol: You could see the sea below through the slats in the floor ! :shock:

Might be worth it to take a push bike? :)
