what was you first multiplier reel??????

The reason I ask is I am thinking of buying one and don't have a clue where to start! I love using fixed spools but i would like to have a go with a mutliplier, plus i could do with a few extra reels

So the question is, what was your first mutliplier????????

My first one was some crappy Chinese no name for 45 euro, I used it to learn the principle of multi use with spinning tackle, then moved on from there to a millionaire 300-s, the levelwind went on this, then I moved onto 6500 and a slosh both CT, won't look back now.
The Chinese reel is screwed even though a return was offered, it did what it had to and stopped me messing up some more expensive reels and it isn't worth repairing.

Daiwa Millionaire 6000M ( about 17 years ago ), followed by 7HT's, Abu 6500's then Penn 525's.

The original Daiwa is still going strong and my first 7HT is currently being used for field work ( among other new shiny things 8) ).

Just goes to show that if you buy quality and look after it, it will last a lifetime.

A 2nd hand 6500 ct was my first.
The big thing is getting used to casting in a different way. And when picking the reel you have to decide what type of fishing you want it for.

A mitchel 602ap with the nylon spool for shore casting. No longer made and it had no breaks or bearings. I still have it and use it for pier congering.

For a first multiplier don't get a bargain basement reels as it will be useless. Penn, Daiwa and abu will all be perfect depending on the ground you want to fish.

it will be a mixture of rough and clean will that matter much

if thats the case id go for a penn 525/supermag or 525 extra all 3 reels are robust good casting and have a good fast retrieve and a powerfull handle perfect all round reels no matter where you fish 8)

my first was a shakesphere neptune, if i had to advise one for a beginner i would have to say a daiwa 7ht!

My first was the mitchell 602ap , the line used to go over the lip and get caugh round the spindal ,I remember taking it on a boat trip and the spool spilt there was a metal spool avaible I think . God bless the sweds for abu reels

I understand there was a 602 with a metal spool as well for boat fishing but it also had a reputation for exploding under pressure. I bought mine around 20 years ago when I was to young to know any better and it was a pain in the arse. I got a multiplier as I read it was the thing to do when I should of got a useable fixed spool. A lesson for anyone starting out.

Its great for conger pier fishing as running off the rachet is very light compared to the modern reels and the end tension can be adjusted to modify the resistance but with a 3 to 1 it's useless over the rocks.

Daiwa Millionaire m37-2b i think? Was ok for the cash. Back using fixed spool myself now but got an abu 6500c power handle a couple of weeks ago. Was £45 in veals and made in sweden which i believe means better quality. Has a level wind which may turn a lot of people off. There are ct frames for sale though i'm not sure how much they are. Seems like a solid enough reel to me so far.

1st multi was a 6500 ct sports mag (8 or 10 years old and still pwo)and still looking good ,great reel to learn on and still great as you can go faster and faster with it as you get better i have two 525 mags but wouldnt give one to a begginer as they are harder to control (dont get a level wind as it will only give you problems (thanks to henries tackle on the sound advice years ago i never looked back :) )

Mine was a Mitchell 602AP as well. The spools did burst as well, one of mine did when trying to get a ton of weed up the beach. Mind you that was after nearly 20 years.

For what you want I'd recommend a Daiwa SL20 or Penn 525. SL20s are my most used reels.

mine was(is) an abu 6500 ct mag that i got yesterday. used it once and i love it. its so much easier than fixed, especially considering the ammount of bad habits i had with it. a fresh start was just what i needed.

Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Six, about 18 years ago.

An ABU 7000 bought in 1980 and still in occasional use today for uptiding and gilling.

It was the The reel for beach casting in Greystones at the time with the mixture of rough and clean ground in Ballygannon.

This was the model with the bush bearings. The level wind had to be hacked off and a few anglers at the time could cast close to 200 yards on a mix of 3in1 oil and brake blocks. Rods were mosty ABU's 464 or 484.
