Spinning question......

When spinning a mepps, or toby type lure, do you generally cast the lure out on its own, or do you add some weight to the line to get it out further? I have tried several methods from using a 1 oz weight with the lure flowing on about 4ft of line behind the weight with one or two small ball bearing type weights along the 4ft trace to keep the lure as close to the bottom as possible to using the lure on its own and trying to keep the lure close to the surface, I find I don’t get much distance casting the lure on its own. I have good success fishing with rag, mack or sand eels from the shore, but I don’t think I’ve ever taken a fish from the shore using a lure!
Has anyone any tips?

A rod and reel setup that is matched to the lure weight is what you want ideally, and put braid on it.

My next target is an American style lure fishing setup, short trigger rod with a flat profile multiplier rated for 5-25g lures and pop braid on it.

At the moment I have an 11'6 spinning rod with a cardiff left hand retrieve multiplier and I put powerpro on it there on Friday and headed off down to Poolbeg and caught me a few mackerel on the setup.

you only need to get it out further if the water isint deep enough

if you want to get it out further - your flowing snood with the lure on is the way to go - you still want you lure to be swimming in a relatively horizontal position

no offence to eoin - but if you only want mack out of it - the braid/set up seems overkill to me

technically the setup is fine - but i think its a load of effort if you just want pollack and mackeral

if youve a bit of deepwater at your feet - go with the lead heads and you dont need any addition to your set up

No offence taken it was the first day with the braid on the spinning setup and mack was what was on offer, it's really a setup I have got together for lure fishing for bass.

i hear you eoin - but it would obviously take another 5 pages of writing to actually use your mepps in the correct place at the correct time etc. if you are going for the bass/sea trout they would be far more wise to weight etc. and something not being right about what they are chasing

in that case keep it simple as possible :)

So what would you say is the ideal set up for Sea Trout?
