plugs and poppers

I read an article in a mag on bass plugging the other day. There was no mention of putting a lead weight up from the plug to increase casting distance. Is it the case that you do not put lead on the line? - because it defeats the object of having the plug on or near the surface?

Is it also the case that the big plugs I see in tackle mags are used only from a boat? I can not see any of the fish I catch taking something nine inches long. What is a best size from the shore? - and would clear line be best ( I like to use coloured so that I can see it for control).

putting weight in front of the plug wreks the action of the plug. if you cant get about 20-40 yards out of the plug you dont have the right gear. plugs of 9 inches can be used from the shore but i find 6 inches to be a better size.

as for the line i would just tie on a swivel and the a foot or two of fluorocarbon.

I'd agree with midget: no weights. You should get far enough with a suitable rod and reel. If you need more distance, consider using a metal spinner.

Braid is a worthwhile investment. It casts well, is strong and because it doesn't stretch you can impart a more direct action into the lures if required.

I use a short length of amnesia rather than flourocarbon as I find it resistant to abrasion and the knots are strong.

You can get plugs that are weighted, just like the boys said, theres noway id put a weight near the plug...Keep the cast smooth and you will find the distance increasing... I use a fluro leader of about 3 foot, i connect this to braid with a double grinner knot back 2 back... works very well...

hello from flip, i never use weight on plugs at all , just use plugs between, 18 gram and 28 gram, with braid, , i use 28g mostly , you will get awt very far, not that you need to , most bass are close in , attach my braid strait to the lure with strong r clip, and had iv had a few bass over 10lb, never had a problem with attach clips straight to the plug, YET, hope thats a bit of help to you . 8) 8)

Good to get sound advice from people who know their stuff.

a decent 9 to 10 foot lure rod (a lot of the ones you sea sold as sea spinning rods are way too heavy, i use a nine foot daiwa regal lure special) with a good progresive action and a good fixed spool loaded with 30lbs power pro or similar braid should see you put yards on your distance over a heavy sea spnning rod and mono.

you should be able to get good distance with plugs up to 30 grams and things like german sprats, kilties or wedges should cast like a bullet.

I looked at some light lure rods today and can see the idea of using light tackle with lures. The tempation with me as a beginner was to use just one "sea spinner" for most of my rock fishing. Thanks.

hey guys, what strength mono do u use as a leader on braid? i use 25lb amensia and wondering if it might put the fish off?

I use 15-20lb fluorocarbon,its depend on your mainline.2 times the strength of your baid or a few lb extra of the strength of your braid will do.

A tip I picked up from American anglers is to put a feather just in front of the lure, as it makes it look like the lure is chasing another smaller fish. That is about the only thing that works in front of a lure / plug - find it tends to work on pollack in the main, bass being mythical beasts up here in Mayo :lol:

I use a short length of flourorcarbon ahead of the briad, but I use about 5 lbs b/s less than the braid, reckoning I prefer to keep the braid, and where possible I use lure savers on the hooks that are 10 lbs lighter than the braid so that they are lighter than the flourocarbon as well...

Kieran,do you mean the lure saver split rings??Btw most of the braid on the market are 2x than the strength of what stated on the spool.The strength of the braid is not consistent as the mono.Most of the braid tested reveal that most of them stronger than what stated on the label.But no doubts that its one of the big things ever for us angler and specially lure angler.
